AIBU or is the 'we depend on advertising to keep the lights on' a ^little^ annoying?

From a multi million pound enterprise? Preying on sometimes vulnerable women? So that you can subject them to more advertising?

You're not a charity. We are not here in sympathy with you. We are here because you provide a forum you can make money from.

How can you compare 'keeping the lights on' in a multi-million pound business to a vulnerable poster who actually can't afford electricity?

Have you completely lost your soul? Because you'll lose all your minions soon if you don't change your tune.

Agreed. I turned it off recently to access a webpage that didn't let you browse with an adblocker on. Went about my internetting for ages with the ads showing and not too bothered. Then I went onto mumsnet and immediately had to turn it back on.

Seriously, it's really unusually intrusive.

Laiste · 24/10/2017 10:49

Please come and add your bit here on site stuff with us. MN are reading this one (or they were)

is rather pay a sub. for a start, it would get rid of half these poo trolls, the mansplainers and the huns.

Slimthistime · 24/10/2017 11:02

Quite a few posters have said they only got ad blocker in the first place because of the intrusive ads on MN. There aren't any other websites I use that have such intrusive banner ads. Also, it makes using it at work very hard which must surely cut down on MN revenue, lol.

LurkingHusband · 24/10/2017 11:11

Raises the question of "how much ?". Too little and you won't recoup the loss of advertising. Too much ... ditto. Plus the technical issues of re-engineering the site to work on a subscriber basis and take payments.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 24/10/2017 11:25

Haven't read the full thread yet...but yeah this is pissing me right off.

I try and whitelist sites I want to support, but I adblock them again if their ads become too intrusive on my usage of the site.

And it's down to you MN, that I started blocking you again.

Stupid half page ads, stuff that made my site experience slow and frustrating.

Look, I get for it to be a free site, ads make revenue.
But when your ads start taking over my ability to use what is essentially a simple chat forum, I get annoyed.

Plus your wording is terrible, and I'm with OP....the begging, from a website making millions, especially when you are making money from incredibly vulnerable people, feels rather "off".

No you don't need to "keep the lights on" - how offensive to those of us who really know what it's like to not be able to pay the electricity bill.

What you mean is "we need to pay wages/bills and still turn a profit"

You ARE NOT A CHARITY. And your choice of language implies you are.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 24/10/2017 11:33

I recommend Ghostery/Windscribe/Firefox btw incase anyone likes to pick and choose what data and ads they deal with!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/10/2017 11:38

It is annoying but it's less annoying than the bloody adverts

Exactly ... and isn't it ironic that the message has appeared right at the time when adverts are starting to eat the site? Hmm

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was said that MN were looking for new financial backers or something? If so, maybe they're keen to increase ad revenue so the bottom line looks better?

LurkingHusband · 24/10/2017 11:50

The flip side being any backers would get their hands on all the MN user data ... you might see targeted ads based on your postings.

KrytensNanobots · 24/10/2017 15:35

I get that you have to have adverts as you're a business, but can you PLEAAAASE make its stop dropping down over the entire screen every time I refresh or change pages??? It started yesterday and it's driving me mad!!
It obscures entire threads for ages before shrinking back.

DobbyTheFreeElf · 24/10/2017 15:50

Yes its annoying I wish they would get rid of it, and no I will not get rid of the ad-blocker. I had to get the ad-blocker because of the annoying ads that scrolled along the sides and made the site unusable.

AaaaaaaarrghmyGMumsnet · 24/10/2017 17:03

Hi everyone, there's a couple of threads running about this at the moment over in Site Stuff. Justine has posted over here, please do head over and have a read.

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 24/10/2017 17:05

I installed an ad blocker when they had only a small ad on the right hand side - but it was animated and it kept freezing the entire screen.

Keep it to small ads which don't interfere with the site loading or freezing, and I will happily remove it.

EvilRinguBitch · 24/10/2017 19:48

Do you want to have another go at that link Amy? Grin

AaaaaaaarrghmyGMumsnet · 24/10/2017 20:05

Bah! So sorry, fixed now. Thanks EvilRinguBitch Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 24/10/2017 20:06

Another one who only installed an adblocker because without it mumsnet was completely and utterly unusable

Laiste · 25/10/2017 07:58

Bumping so today's posters can find the site stuff thread.

LEMtheoriginal · 25/10/2017 08:09

The ads are irritating at times but it is ur to expect mnet to be totally free especially now it's so huge

Laiste · 25/10/2017 08:35

No one is asking for it to be totally free of ads though Lem.

Laiste · 25/10/2017 08:38

It's an interesting read over there. Some people are struggling to use the site now due to the design or the ads, the loading screens of the ads, the speed of the load and the space they are taking up at the top now.

brasty · 25/10/2017 09:12

Yes no one is expecting the site to be free of ads. They simply want the site to still be usable and fun to use.
MNHQ need to look at how users use the site - they will have analytics of this. If a site has a long journalistic article, I will put up with an intrusive advert at the beginning. Because you see it once, and then you read an article for 30 mins. On MN I bounce around different threads, and even if I am reading the same thread, I have to refresh it to read the latest contribution. Every single time I get an intrusive banner advert hanging around.

CoteDAzur · 25/10/2017 09:24

Reddit manages to “keep the lights on” with just a few small ads that don’t move, jiggle, or cover half the screen.

scottishdiem · 25/10/2017 22:51

Reddit is the 9th most visited site in the world. Mumsnet is not even in the UK top fifty.

Reddit is valued at 1.8 billion dollars. Mumsnet less.....

Reddit raised 200 million dollars in investment funding. Mumsnet has adverts and sponsors.

Reddit became popular on the back of a vast number of hate filled racist anti-semitic men. Mumsnet has a different role to play.

The two dont compare really but Reddit is still available to you.

I am happy with the ads. I dont expect things for free because I am not entitled.

Oishinbo · 25/10/2017 22:54

entitled to use an adblocker, really?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/10/2017 22:55

I dont expect things for free because I am not entitled.

I expect a site to work, i do not believe i am entitled if i want to post but am unable to as its taking ages to load

I had to install adblocker as without it the site was unusable
