Option to mute a user?

Stormtreader · 12/12/2016 11:10

This has been suggested on a thread and sounds like a great idea - on a thread where a user is blatantly trolling, can there be an option to mute them in that thread?

What do you mean "mute"? Wouldn't that be the same as a hide poster function?

Stormtreader · 12/12/2016 16:20

I had no idea that was a thing! How would I do that?

It isn't a thing at the moment-it's been suggested a lot but MNHQ aren't keen.

Soubriquet · 12/12/2016 16:42

I can see why they aren't keen either

It will become very bitchy when people realise they have been hidden

Your best off hiding the thread altogether

SaltySalt · 12/12/2016 16:45

I agree and posters yelling " hidden!" or " muted!" if they don't agree with someones opinion

The problem with hiding the thread is its sometimes a good thread, just with one person persistently trying to derail it with trolling. It gets a bit annoying having to scroll past them trying to read the actual thread while seeing their posts with skim reading and having to keep reminding myself that they are just trolling and to forget it....

If there's someone derailing you can report them.

A 'hide poster' option has been debated over many years. The general consensus is a big 'no' - both from MNers and MNHQ.

Hi Stormtreader. Yes, as others have said, it is something we've looked at in the past and always decided it wouldn't be very popular and in many cases, would mean it was impossible to follow a thread, what with all the people that hadn't muted them replying.

Also, it seems a bit 'against the spirit of conversation', if you know what we mean? Often, one person's derail is another person's 'EXTREMELY valid and important point that NO ONE is listening to!'. So you can see why it's a bit of a difficult thing to implement.

If you do think someone is deliberately derailing though, do drop us a line and we can have a word.

Hope that explains our thoughts a bit further anyway.
