Can a representative from the BBC and Guardian be called to do a webchat to discuss events in Cologne on NYE?

Given the unprecedented volume of posts expressing anger/frustration with how the media (especially the Guardian and the BBC) covered events in Cologne on New Years Eve, would you please ask for a representative for those organisations to come and do a web chat? I think it would be useful.

That's really good Lumela.

carlajean · 11/01/2016 22:40

Thanks lumela. It says what they need to answer.
There you go Mumsnet - can you use that?

Hello all and thanks LumelaMme.

We're going to get in touch with the press offices at the Guardian and the BBC to alert them to this and other threads, and see if anyone will come on to address the issues raised.

We'll let you know as soon as we hear back from them.

VertigoNun · 12/01/2016 09:42

Thanks Smile

LumelaMme · 12/01/2016 10:06

Glad to be of service n'all that.

All we have to do is wait...

2016IsANewYearforMe · 12/01/2016 10:26

Thank you Katemumsnet. That is a glimmer of good news.

MamaMary · 12/01/2016 13:14

Thanks Mumsnet.

Can we also ask about the German government policing discussion and comments on the internet - www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-35105003 - surely UK media would frown on this as the eroding of free speech and a worrying development.

VertigoNun · 12/01/2016 20:51

Pat on the back to Ch4 news and WEP for their discussion.

carlajean · 13/01/2016 17:07

So, mumsnet, have you got in touch with the press offices? Have you had a response from them? Even a 'no'. It would be interesting to hear the reasons given for their coverage of the story, as given the amount of flac these organisations are still getting on here, one would have thought they would find it expedient.

Morning

We've put requests in to the BBC and the Guardian. We haven't heard back from the BBC yet but the Guardian have declined to take part in a webchat.

VertigoNun · 14/01/2016 10:18

The Guardian gave you a huge V in today's article.

Victoria Derbyshire have turned it around, decent coverage.

Thank you MNHQ.

carlajean · 14/01/2016 10:23

Thank for trying mums net. Says it all really. Cross fingers for BBC (but not holding breath)

I'm never, ever, buying the Guardian again.
NEVER.

Thanks for trying, MNHQ.

Roonerspism · 14/01/2016 10:39

According to the Guardian, the fact that woman are scared to venture out at night now in Germany is a "nuance".

Guardian - if you are reading this thread, wake the fuck up.

The comments to the article are worth reading. The article hasn't just down played the attacks - it has denied most of them even happened

Olivepip59 · 14/01/2016 17:10

Thank you anyway for trying. Actions and words and all that - free speech? Really? Another one whose decades-long love affair with the Guardian is over.

Though to be fair, we've been drifting apart for a while. Nothing in common, I don't feel respected or listened to and frankly the sex is shite.

BungoWomble · 14/01/2016 19:29

I complained to the BBC about the limited coverage of all the European sex attacks (they barely mentioned anything outside Cologne), their failure to deliver the full facts (that attackers were migrants), lack of analysis and failure to ask any questions in comparison to other terrorist activities.

They've replied. They basically said that it was the German authorities fault for being so slow to release the story, and that they have in fact given Cologne lots of coverage.

That's it. No mention of any possible investigation and analysis of the whole events, outside Cologne, or of any wider implications, e.g Sweden as European rape capital. They obviously don't believe in investigative journalism any more. Anyone interested in possible BBC bias might want to look at voxpoliticalonline.com/2016/01/13/beastrabban-on-bias-at-the-bbc/
