Hi Folks,
Our new Talk app is now live in the App Store. If you used the old app and didn't delete it then it should auto-update (depending on your settings) but otherwise you can download it from the app store.

This is a obviously a first live version - we plan to keep updating it, adding new features and addressing any user issues, so all feedback is most welcome.

Plus, we are planning to build an Android version too in the next few months - thanks for your patience re that Android users - we'll keep you updated on the progress and will be looking for Android testers in due course.

JustineMumsnet · 25/09/2015 12:17

I'm afraid no plans right now - Windows users just 1.39% of our current audience and building apps is mighty expensive. Sorry!

JustineMumsnet · 25/09/2015 12:31

@beaucoupdemojo

And android. Second class citizens we are Wink

It's all about pleasing as many of the people as we can - Android users 24%. But it will come, I promise!

JustineMumsnet · 25/09/2015 12:32

@LovelyFriend

well done MN - I've been testing the new AP for a while now and it is a vast improvement on the old one.

Thanks for testing it Lovely - much appreciated.

JustineMumsnet · 25/09/2015 12:32

@RainbowFlutterby

I'm going to stick with the mobile site thanks all the same. I tested the app, but for as long as I can't hide completely irrelevant "stickied" threads I'm not going to bother.

Never mind. I'm sure you won't lose any sleep over it.

Thanks - that's interesting feedback.

JessicaMumsnet · 25/09/2015 14:08

@wannaBe

ok, am posting from it now.

The first and for me most important at this stage piece of feedback is that it appears to work well with voiceover, so well done to the developers for achieving that from the outset without the need for me to complain. ;)

it's going to take me some time to get used to the idea of selecting emoticons rather than typing them in manually, so the jury's still out on whether I'll stick with this or the mobile site. I suspect it may end up being a combination of both. :D.

Hello wannaBe, we spent some time working on the accessibility options including voiceover and dynamic type and we're really pleased it's helped you.

You can still type the emoticons out if you prefer (like this without the spaces) [ smile ] and the app will post as an emoticon.

We're updating a page of FAQs based on questions raised here so keep 'em coming! Thank you

JessicaMumsnet · 25/09/2015 15:12

Peaceloveandjammydodgers and Gruach yy we agree a search option would be useful and we're thinking about messaging too. We're keen to get a first version out there into people's hands and then update regularly with new features. Some functions are harder to build than others though so it will take us a bit of time to get there.
In the meantime we are interested in what you think we should prioritise - no promises but we'd love your thoughts! Thanks

JessicaMumsnet · 25/09/2015 15:16

@mermaidbutmytailfelloff

Sorry but its a big fat no from me, I can't make the text big enough to see.

PLEASE can you address accessibility issues? I have blathered on about this before several times and am just ignored. Not everyone has perfect sight and those who haven't need customisable text size and contrast.

Hello mermaidbutmytailfelloff,
We have designed with accessibility in mind. The colour choices within the app include a high contrast option and in future we are looking at adding other colour theme options. We’ve also made sure the app works with iOS accessibility functions like voice over and dynamic text size.
Would you mind giving it a go customising your text size and colour? We'd also love to have your input on testing future updates if you'd be up for that.

PeteTech · 25/09/2015 23:42

Thanks all for the feedback, appreciated. Smile

Obviously the app is still a work in progress, so we're diligently making a note of what people have to say.

MountainDweller Quick tip for you: when replying you should be able to close the "New Post" screen and go back to the thread to have a look. Then when you press "reply" again, what you've written so far should still be there. If not, let us know and we'll look into it.

If you've bookmarked a particular post, you can tap the "show bookmarked post" button at the bottom of the New Post screen to see it without closing (or the OP if you haven't bookmarked). You'll see that button if you tap outside the text box to hide your keyboard.

PeteTech · 26/09/2015 09:39

Butterflies Thanks for the feedback -if you slide a thread or post to the left you'll find various options, including bookmarking. Have attached some pictures so you can what it looks like.

RedYellaGreen there will be some FAQs etc published on the website for now. But, we'll be having a think about how best to introduce functions that aren't obvious to people inside the app itself as well. We had lots of ideas but, unfortunately, not enough time to act on them (especially since the old app went offline).

PeteTech · 26/09/2015 17:49

PigeonPost if you slide a post to the left you'll find a "bookmark" option. When you bookmark a post it should take you right back there the next time you view that particular thread Smile

ByTheSea if you could attach a screenshot of what you do see, we will look into it

PeteTech · 26/09/2015 21:39

ByTheSea Thanks for that, will have a look into it. Could you let me know your iPad model and iOS version as well if possible?

PeteTech · 27/09/2015 10:08

WhenWillWe, Only1Scoop yes we agree the app would benefit from a search function a lot and it's on our list of features, but will have to come in a future update.

RedButtonhole have you tried flipping the thread when you want to get straight to the end? It'll order the thread with the newest post at the top. It's the button at the top right hand corner. Or if there's a reason that flip isn't suitable for you, that would be great feedback, so we'd love to hear why not.

GameOfGroans at the moment it marks a thread as read by filling the colour of the number of posts box. But when a new post appears on that thread, it will revert to white again to indicate that there's something new to read. I can see that it might be handy for people to see that they've been on a thread before (even if there are new posts) so I'll add your suggestion to our list of updates for discussion. Thanks.

PeteTech · 27/09/2015 10:12

ByTheSea ah good, glad to hear it. By any chance, do you know what version of iOS you were on before you successfully updated? 7 or 8?

PeteTech · 27/09/2015 10:47

PrimalLass thanks for the feedback. We've supported iOS accessibility features, so you can adjust the text size from within your iOS settings (Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Larger Text). Hope that helps, but if not let us know - always good to have feedback on this kind of stuff.

PeteTech · 27/09/2015 11:27

Thanks for your feedback PrimalLass.

We have a lot of users of iPhones with smaller screens and landscape isn't a great experience on those, hence the portrait only on phones decision. We'll add it to our list of possible features, and I'll have a play around with it in the office and see what landscape looks like.

I'm not an expert on fonts myself (I'm more tech than design), but I'll make sure your feedback on readability gets to the right person as well.

PeteTech · 27/09/2015 12:30

LIZS not at the moment unfortunately, but shall add it to the list of possible features to be discussed

PeteTech · 27/09/2015 14:26

LIZS thanks for letting us know. Yes, I've noticed this a couple of times today as well. I've reported it to our backend developers, and they'll look into it as soon as they can.

PeteTech · 27/09/2015 19:12

Thanks ByTheSea that should be plenty of info for me to figure what version it was Smile

JessicaMumsnet · 27/09/2015 20:04

Thanks all, this feedback is really useful. We've started putting an FAQs page together and we'll keep adding to it.

A few people have asked about having lines between posts. One of the issues we faced with that approach was on threads were there are very short posts you end up with many lines making for a pretty cluttered screen. However, leave it with us and we can experiment a bit more.

JessicaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 10:24

Hi BitOutOfPractice, sorry to hear you're getting errors when posting - the tech team are looking into that now.

As MrsWembley mentioned we have been doing lots of testing prior to this release and would love you to join that testing group of 500 odd so we can get your thoughts earlier in the process. We're continuing to develop and add features and advanced search and PMs are very much on the list.

Thanks again for your feedback.

JessicaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 10:53

No, not just you I'm afraid - we've identified the issue and Tech are working on it now so should be sorted very soon. If it does keep happening please do flag again.

Understood re Hackergate Sad, FWIW the updated app (and test versions) use https to securely transmit information and we don't store extra details or personal info about testers. If you ever change your mind just let us know. Flowers

JessicaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 19:16

Hi lonecateithkitten thanks for the heads up we'll take a look into that ASAP

JessicaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 19:18

Ifiwasabadger bookmarking a post will jump you straight to that post when you return to the thread. It's handy for marking you're place so you don't have to scroll through again.
