No, you can't view threads you've just posted on
No, you can't view active
No, blank in response to threads you're watching
And blank to the threads you tried to comment on.
Nothing!

I face booked including videos in between and then...

Feck all!
And in thanks I have signed up to net mums (thanks to potato gate) and am posting prolifically (until I get banned as I've only adjusted my swearing for now) so there!

Fuckityfuck.

distributed denial of service Lizs

when someone stops a large number of IP addresses accessing a service

something like that [non techy]

SusanMichelson · 12/08/2015 10:58

oh good two of us think it's that Grin

cozietoesie · 12/08/2015 11:01

Here you go LIZS. It's a bit rough but it will give you the general idea.

Pipbin · 12/08/2015 11:06

He claims on Twitter that he's stolen everyone's data.

I wonder if he threatens women in the street too?

cozietoesie · 12/08/2015 11:07

Actually, Yes - I agree with Pipbin. Thanks Tech - I should imagine that all Tech shore leave was cancelled for the duration.

LIZS · 12/08/2015 11:09

So would the victims be the MN systems or are individual posters also potential targets?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/08/2015 11:09

I can't get worked up about the site being down every once in a while. Surely if you're that dependent on MN that you take to Netmums to try to see what's going on Confused Confused it's probably time to look for something else to fill the void?

It's only a website. It was only down for a bit and it's back again now. Oh and considering it's a free to access website I don't think they do too badly.

Obviously the communication could do with some work, particularly after yet another the update débâcle... but it was always thus.

Melonfool · 12/08/2015 11:10

"although if I was MN, I'd have long ago covered all bases on that. "

You'd be surprised. DP works on Internet security and one of his clients is a major overseas bank who had a DDOS attack 5 years ago and whose country version of the FCA put a warning on them, and they lost a lot of customers......they are only now starting to close the security breaches that led to it.

And, let's face it, MN might feel vital to us, but it's really not that important. (and maybe I got an extra half an hour or so of sleep due to not being able to connect....)

cozietoesie · 12/08/2015 11:10

The MN systems. (If it was truly a DDOS attack - which is open to some doubt in the absence of any HQ comment.)

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 11:11

He can get as excited as he wants with my data. After bleeding heart I use separate emails and passwords for various places.

cozietoesie · 12/08/2015 11:12

Doesn't surprise me Melonfool - although I'm fairly paranoid about security so would have handled it differently I hope.

thornrose · 12/08/2015 11:12

Seems you're right, MNHQ have a thread about it now.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/08/2015 11:14

That Twitter troll sounds a right inadequate.

Is it the online equivalent of goal hanging?

As far as I know a DDOS attack is not done by hacking the site directly (which he'd need to do to steal data) or have I got that wrong?

ActiviaYoghurt · 12/08/2015 11:15

I have tried to up skill myself on Internet Security and huge companies still have attacks on a weekly basis, scary stuff.

thornrose · 12/08/2015 11:15

According to MNHQ:

This is known in the trade as a denial of service attack: one in which a person, or organisation, deliberately floods a website with requests for pages, with the intention of overwhelming its servers and preventing bona fide users from accessing the site.

ActiviaYoghurt · 12/08/2015 11:16

Actually I think that there are still Gremlins about as threads keep getting added to my "watch list" when I haven't requested it...

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/08/2015 11:23

That's a known issue from the latest update activia. You need to go to customise and change it.

cozietoesie · 12/08/2015 11:39

If it's a DDOS attack, Moving, my understanding is that much depends on the motivation. If it's someone sitting in their bedroom and playing silly beggars for self-aggrandisement that's one thing - if it's 'smokescreening' that's something else.

I would be guessing that Tech are having a post mortem right now - again - to discuss last night's issues and with a view to putting proper precautions in place. There is still a lot of responsibility on the part of users, though, to keep themselves safer eg how many people use this site who don't have unique passwords for it, etc?

LaurieFairyCake · 12/08/2015 12:34

I think it's fantastic that Mumsnet is so subversive that some fucker wants to take it down

No doubt it's some sweaty handed bloke who's never had a real relationship or indeed a girlfriend in his entire life

thornrose · 12/08/2015 13:23

Looks like he's just hacked someone else on the other Site Stuff thread! Could do with another MNHQ response about now?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/08/2015 16:28

Thanks cozie. I was under the impression that a DDOS attack is external and involves flooding the site with traffic until it falls over, whereas to get information they would have to actually hack MN's system from the inside.

I'll wait and see what happens.

BeccaMumsnet · 13/08/2015 17:04

Hi everyone - please do take a look at this thread for info on what has been occurring. Thanks all.
