Isn't about time MNHQ started deleting posts that attack people's spelling and grammar?

(In advance I will say any of my posts are likely to have spelling and grammar mistakes)

It's such a shitty thing to do and often it is directed at poster who then feel they have to explain themselves and disclose they have dyslexia. I don't understand why MN tolerate people with potential disabilities being mocked in this way?

Why can it not be regarded as a personal attack and such comments deleted. Very often the arses that post comments about another posters spelling bring nothing else to the thread and usually it derails the thread and the OP's original issue gets lost in the ensuing bunfight.

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I post from a desktop with no predictive text or spell checker & get quite worried at times that I am going to make a "misteak" & be pulled up for it.

It is indeed a personal attack & should not be tolerated.

cuntycowfacemonkey · 28/05/2015 22:14

I've seen genuinely upset OP's posting about a serious issue and the very first post is nothing more than some one going HAVE HAVE HAVE not OF. Fuck of you insensitive, smug, bullying, pricks. GAH!

OP posts:
DosDuchas · 28/05/2015 22:16

NO NO NO

they are what keeps it Middle class and keeps the advertisers in

CelibacyCakeAndFuckThePO · 28/05/2015 22:19

Have and Of are not indicative of dyslexia.

It is indicative of poor grammar.

Mumsnet users have always had a low tolerance (generally speaking) of poor grammar and spelling.

It's what makes the site appeal to many like myself who can not bear to have to decipher text wot spks lyk dis an people who insist on using phrases like "hubz" and "bubba" and also using "lol" as punctuation.

Personal attacks should be deleted.

Pulling up posters for incorrect use of grammar, should not.

DosDuchas · 28/05/2015 22:21

get rid of the oiks Wink

AtomicDog · 28/05/2015 22:22

If mistakes are not highlighted, how can they improve?

There is absolutely no excuse for using 'of' instead of 'have' in that way.

Pipbin · 28/05/2015 22:22

I think that sometimes an OP can be difficult to follow when there is no punctuation and posters trying to clarify can sound a bit arsey.
I also think it's fair if someone is posting something about how clever they are and then they write 'could of'.

I don't think that MN should delete posts unless the OP complains. They are not the police.

cuntycowfacemonkey · 28/05/2015 22:23

I never said it was indicative of dyslexia Hmm and I'm not saying everyone who make spelling mistakes has dyslexia. Nor am I referring to text speak which is hard to read.

How arrogant of you to think it's your job to pull up adults on their spelling. I don't understand people like you Celibacy I really don't you just sound mean and sneery, it's a far less appealing quality than being crap at spelling.

OP posts:
DosDuchas · 28/05/2015 22:23

it is my job tbh

Samcro · 28/05/2015 22:23

its a PA surely so should be deleted
arses that think belittling someone scores them points are pointless

DosDuchas · 28/05/2015 22:24

yeah thickos Wink

CelibacyCakeAndFuckThePO · 28/05/2015 22:25

So, you ask a question.

I disagree and explain why.

That makes "people like me" mean and sneary.

Im sorry, are we 15??

DosDuchas · 28/05/2015 22:28

op you are wrong

when did you join MN?

QueenBean · 28/05/2015 22:28

If mistakes are not highlighted, how can they improve?

What a horrible thing to say. How patronising to think that the most important thing, for someone who has potentially come here for some real, proper help and who might be in a terrible situation, is to correct them.

Bloody shameful.

thehumanjam · 28/05/2015 22:29

There is a difference between text speak and spelling mistakes/grammatical errors. I don't think errors should be pointed out unless it changes the content of the post.

I remember a few years ago a fairly well known poster picked me up on a mistake in a very condescending manner. However she failed to notice that she had also made a grammatical error in her post so of course I had to pull her up on it as she had been so rude to me. Cue a few posts with people arguing about grammar which was nothing to do with the original post and it added nothing to the discussion whatsoever.

DosDuchas · 28/05/2015 22:29

or right?

BIWI · 28/05/2015 22:29

I'm on the fence on this one.

I don't like it when it's done as you describe, when an OP has posted something very sensitive. And it can be horribly sneery, which does veer very close to becoming a PA.

However, I also hate the increasing rise of text speak, crap spelling and poor grammar. I am a pedant through and through Grin and I do believe that it's important to spell properly and write grammatically.

(Although I also recognise that on here we're not writing something formal, and that often people make mistakes. In fact I think it's the rule that if you're posting to criticise someone's spelling or grammar, you will make a mistake yourself)

Mumsnet is somewhere that prides itself on being a place for intelligent posters. So surely that means we should also value a higher standard of writing?

So I don't agree with it when it can be construed as a personal attack, but where it's not, I don't see the problem.

cuntycowfacemonkey · 28/05/2015 22:30

Well in fairness my question was to MNHQ not you and I wasn't actually seeking opinions from your type who clearly think it's an acceptable thing to do. I honestly don't care why you do it or how you justify it but I do care why MNHQ allows it.

Is that true MNHQ - are you a site only for those with a sufficient level of intelligence?

Spelling and grammar aren't necessarily indicative of IQ and what a shame to dismiss some exceptionally knowledgeable posters on the basis of their writing style.

OP posts:
Shakey1500 · 28/05/2015 22:34

I've never pulled a poster up for incorrect spelling and poor grammar, but it's really annoying to read and makes me twitchy.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 28/05/2015 22:34

I've been on MN for years. I have a job where part of what I do is check and correct documents written by adults for spelling and grammar. But I totally agree with OP - it's sneering and nasty, especially on threads where the poster wants advice. Hoist up judgy pants and feel superior if you like, but it's not necessary to post.

CelibacyCakeAndFuckThePO · 28/05/2015 22:34

What BIWI said.

cuntycowfacemonkey · 28/05/2015 22:34

did you mean scenery or sneery Wink

OP posts:
cuntycowfacemonkey · 28/05/2015 22:36

Twitching behind your screen or biting down on a pillow perfectly OK Shakey.
