Mumsnet Troll Policy

Carrie (mumsnet) · 29/04/2004 13:55

Hi all,

We thought it was about time we outlined and explained mumsnet policy on the thorny issue of trolls. (For those who don?t know a troll is someone who poses as someone else in order to stir up trouble, fulfil their own perverted agenda, or just for the hell of it).

Unfortunately it?s not always immediately obvious whether a poster is in fact a troll. We all tend to be a bit suspicious of new folks posting things of a sensitive or inflammatory nature but we would rather mumsnet erred on the side of giving folks the benefit of the doubt and risked being made to look a bit foolish than pounce on someone who turns out to be genuinely in need of help. We hope you agree.

Secondly in our experience trolls thrive on attention ? the more aggressively you or we attack, the more likely they are to stick around and cause mayhem ? ignore their posts and usually they?ll go away. Ban them and there?s nothing to stop them returning with a new email address and identity (no website can stop that happening).

Having said that, whether posted by trolls or otherwise, we won?t tolerate any unnecessarily abusive or offensive postings and would certainly ban anyone who was persistently doing this of kind of thing. Please do [email protected] if you have any concerns at all and we promise take it very seriously and to closely monitor any troublemakers.

We are conscious that most mumsnetters have enough stresses in their lives without finding more on here. But on the bright side, considering the number of users and discussions, disturbances are mercifully few and far between not least because you, the members and moderators, police the boards extremely effectively and with a good deal of common sense yourselves. In four years the number of people we?ve banned has been well under double figures (and one of them was a misunderstanding put ). Long may that continue!

Best,
Carrie, Rachel and Justine

so, Janh do you sympathise with a man with a 46 inch chest who is a big girls blouse?

Janh · 29/04/2004 21:26

Burping troll

Something to do with Tolkien here - dunno if it's relevant (wonder if they also have a farting troll like beety?)

nightowl · 29/04/2004 21:27

Codswallop · 29/04/2004 21:40

so it means to move around!

Janh · 29/04/2004 21:41

According to a 1908 Cyclopedia: "Trolls are Dwarfs of Northern mythology, living in hills or mounds; they are represented as stumpy, misshapen, and humpbacked, inclined to thieving, and fond of carrying off children or substituting one of their own offspring for that of a human mother. They are called hill-people, and are especially averse to noise, from a recollection of the time when Thor used to fling his hammer at them."

Would make me averse too!

(Oh I do love google.)

Well very interesting apparantly a troll is

The act of posting a message in a newsgroup that is obviously exaggerating something on a particular topic, hoping to trick a newbie into posting a follow-up article that points out the mistake.

Thanks Janh

CountessDracula · 29/04/2004 21:42

or

An outrageous message posted to a newsgroup or mailing list or message board to bait people to answer. Trolling is a form of harassment that can take over a discussion. Well meaning defenders can create chaos by responding to trolls. The best response is to ignore it.

Also, the person who posts such messages.

Janh · 29/04/2004 21:44

Here's a sound explanation, CD?>

Janh · 29/04/2004 21:47

That was from wikipedia again (like the Tolkien one). It seems to make sense.
