ok let me explain what I mean by this moderator thing

I have been thinking for some time that it might be helpful to the board to have some sort of (unofficial) moderator to help some of the problems which several people have highlighted. It is my personal feeling that it might help to have someone to step into some of the threads to stop them going into a downward spiral and maybe calm things down a little.
I don't mean just to report personal attacks but more generally to try and change the atmosphere. I know many people have felt inhibited from posting their views about certain conetntious topics because when people have posted against what is felt to be the "orthodoxy" they have been given a hard time for it. I wonder if it might help to have someone not personally involved and not posting their personal opinion but with the specific task of calming things down and improving the atmosphere and level of debate. It might help to depersonalise it a little.
I think there are many people on this site who have the right level of sensitivity to be able to do this well.
This is just my suggestion and is in answer to the many concerns raised over the past few days/weeks/months about the way mumsnet is changing.

Kidstrack · 16/10/2006 13:55

woo i could do that

hulababy · 16/10/2006 13:56

It's what we used to have really isn't it? As a moderator I didn't have any powers to delete or edit stuff posted, but we did the type of thing you are suggesting. Didn't MN have to get rid of their moderators when the other problem first kicked off?

EnidVorhees · 16/10/2006 13:56

dont we all do this anyway

nailpolish · 16/10/2006 13:58

what other problem was that hula??

i think we are all quite good at moderating as and when required to be honest with you

thats what i like about mn

zippitippitoes · 16/10/2006 13:58

I agree because the complaints made now seemed to start when the moderaotors went

hulababy · 16/10/2006 13:59

I mean THE problem - you know, the red box malarky!

nailpolish · 16/10/2006 14:02

i must be missing something ........................

nailpolish · 16/10/2006 14:02

red box ?????????????????????

Munz · 16/10/2006 14:03

is that why the mods all went? I was looking the other day and couldn't find your page - I know saddo over here!

Munz · 16/10/2006 14:03

below NP.

PandaG · 16/10/2006 14:04

Think Hula means the exclamation mark NP. what I weant to know is why did they get rid of the mods when the Voldemort thing kicked off? Never did understand that, or am I dim?

EnidVorhees · 16/10/2006 14:04

I liked it when the mods were 'experts' and wuold help answer queries

who the hell can moderate chat?

If I see a moderator I get all skittish and naughty anyway.

hulababy · 16/10/2006 14:05

LOL! The red box above the box you type your message in!!!

nailpolish · 16/10/2006 14:06

omg

im such a twit!

i see what you mean now hula

harpsichordcarrion · 16/10/2006 14:07

yes, I think lots of people ARE good at it Enid but I don't think people do it so much anymore tbh.
I also think that on some threads I have seen reaosnable people making pretty calming, balanced vanilla comments and getting lambasted for it or even abused.
I have also seen (in retrospect, I haven't been involved) that some threads just get way out of control. and some intervention from someone objective migt have helped?
I think the problem with mods appointed by mn is that if they are official then they have some sort of legal responsibility to police threads.

When we do it 'amongst ourselves' someone always pops up and says 'don't tell me what I can and can't post' - and the whole thing goes up 3 notches!

It was always v good when Lou used to put on her Mods hat - and Marina, too!

It CERTAINLY shouldn't be about weilding power or opinion, but being the on-board reminder of the....Mumsnet Philosophy, and having been sanctioned / accepted by consent to do so.

But I think MNHQ had serious issues with implementation re Unmentionable Gurus...and these days, moderation would be a full time job. (due to size and busy-ness of site - not due to punch-up frequencies!)

harpsichordcarrion · 16/10/2006 14:09

enid you're always skittish and naughty.
yes experts would be good.
I am only proposing it for chat because of the unprecedeted level of unhappiness that seems to be sloshing around about mn and how people don't feel happy postng here any more. I just wanted to suggest something practical, but maybe it isn't realistic in which case I apologise.

PandaG · 16/10/2006 14:09

So I was being dim too !

Thanks Harpsi - see what you mean

harpsichordcarrion · 16/10/2006 14:10

yes, I think so too blu. I mean that when Lou put her mod's hat on.
or marina.

OP posts:
EnidVorhees · 16/10/2006 14:10

god no Lou as a mod annoyed me

EnidVorhees · 16/10/2006 14:11

I'm not unhappy

and as mumsnet is run exclusively for me, which is how i see it, can't we just leave it?

nailpolish · 16/10/2006 14:13

i actually thought a lot of the time the mods were being ignored

does anyone agree with me

(alhtough i would never ignore a mod. they might run me down with their vespa)

Blu · 16/10/2006 14:14

Ah, but Enid, now you're saying then, that you're the reason people are unhappy atm!!!
