Mobile site strife? Come and post here

Hullo everyone,

There are several threads about the mobile site being a bit wonky (technical term that), so we thought we'd start a thread to keep everyone's comments in one place, so we can see what's what.

It seems from the other threads, a few people were having problems with Galaxy S4 - is anyone else?

Please do post saying what you're using (eg iphone 5, safari, ios 7), and we'll try and make things run a bit more smoothly.

How about the bottom buttons not working in landscape mode?

Why are there now ads at the top AND some MNHQ ads in the middle of threads too? Hmm

Too many ads, too small a screen space.

I'm using a HTC One Mini (largest thing that fits in my hand), but while the ads are annoying, my main gripe is how slow the site is - easily 30 seconds to load Active Convos or a 100-post page, and then you have to wait for the whole thing before you can click on any of the links as they go wrong, and the buttons don't appear until the end.

The rest of the internet is fine for me btw. It's getting that LiveJournal during a Russian DDOS attack is faster than MN... who have you guys been annoying?

I am also wondering why the site is so slow. I have fast broadband and everything else is fine, except for the super-slow MN mobile site - and the problem definitely coincided with the reintroduction of the ad at the top of the page. It takes so bloody long to load.

Hi LineRunner, re. the slowness - can you check your preferences to see how many messages are displayed? It could be that yours is set to 'show 1,000 messages'. If you switch to 50 messages max, the speed should improve dramatically.

Terribly slow and also being directed to threads which don't even appear on the screen. This happened once before.

Annoying flashing advert, which messes with my eyeballs. It's hard to read a thread with a flashing ad stuck to the page.

Also, I keep getting "An error has occurred. Page reloaded" which then reloads the page and logs me out. Using Safari, iOS 8 on an iPhone 4S.

And to add, "MNHQ have commented on this thread" doesn't do anything. The word "commented" is in blue but it's not a link.

My preferences are definitely set to show just one page at a time, not the full thread.

There's a few bad ads this morning.

The O2 one and one for the Canary Islands are very flicky.

The envelope one is awful! The pics show where it clicks through to.

That flashing fake inbox one:

Is it a scam?

Is such flashing safe for people who have epilepsy, migraines etc?

Can't MN control the content?

Report
AgentProvocateur · 14/12/2014 10:31

Yes, it's a scam, Linerunner. I started another thread about it a few days ago, and MN said they'd look into it. There are two different "flashing envelope" scam ads on the site.

Thanks for the warning, AgentP.

It's all very concerning tbh.

I don't think MN HQ choose the ads that display, Google does. So for e.g. I have ads for local hotels appearing as banner ads. I know that the majority of you are not seeing that ad as I'm not in the UK. I don't think the 'new message' ad is location based so I'd say everyone is getting that particular. Some of the ads will be based on your browsing history. I think. I'm no expert but that's my understanding of Google ads.

I haven't been on here in days. I used to come on several times a day.

What was the point in having the massive thread(s) about the new mobile site, with lots of migraine/epilepsy sufferers coming on to tell you how bad it was for them, only for this to be completely ignored and put the flashing ads at the top anyway?

It is very very of putting for me. I simply can't stay on the site for long at all now.

But in the long run I suppose that one alienated (longtime) user doesn't matter in the scheme of things when you are making revenue from ads and attracting new users.

As you can probably tell, I am very unhappy. The ads in the middle were bearable and understandable. But the ads at the top are awful.

Not sure if you are listening/care what one person thinks but there it is.

I have only been coming on here recently to check this thread to see what the ad situation is.

The user experience for me has been ruined.

*off putting.
Can't beat to check any other typos as I have a giant purple little woods ad at the top.

The flashing adverts at the top of the screen have stopped me using the mobile site now. They are far too intrusive on a small screen.
