what do ya all recon to a cook book, which is full of nutrious, wholesome meals, but also cheap for those on budgets?

thought it could be done like the MN books they already sell, or do u have to have a qualification or something for cook books?

WW - yes that was exactly my thoughts, I'd love to feed the boy ghood food which is cheap on a budget but acan also be made posher for guests iycwim. althou ther's the copy write aspect - my logic was who better than mums to talk/advice on whwat to cook for your children - like a heniz mums own but in book form. and as u say could includ packed lunches etc.

Sorry, I meant but that's how it came out and I thought I'd leave it.
Carmenere, tell more. Amazon link????

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 03/10/2006 19:18

Well it's out of print now, it was published about 7 yrs ago. And don't want to link for rl/privacy reasons iyswim. It wasn't hugely sucessful but it was a good little book and it started me writing about food professionally.
Basically, I know how to put a book together(as do the folk at mumsnet towers) and I know how to write recipes so as that they are doable by ordinary people.
I also did a nutrition course and have writtena fair few pieces on childhood nutrition and fussy eaters and school lunches and that type of thing.

I would love to work on a mumsnet recipe book and I'm sure it would be a goer.

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 03/10/2006 19:21

Understood. Would feel the same carmenere.
Sounds interesting though!

I think there is scope for loads of books from Mumsnet. The thread a few months back where you just came on and ranted was fabulous and worthy of a wall in the Tate Modern. I saved it to look at from time to time as it has me in stitches and totally sums up life as a parent

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 03/10/2006 19:32

Who was ranting Voluptua?? But that's a good idea to have the odd rant in it

foxinsocks · 03/10/2006 19:34

I loved that ranting thread

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 03/10/2006 19:35

Oh yes that thread was fab.

iamapieceofcheesecake · 03/10/2006 19:38

I think a recipe book is a brill idea. I too like to cook healthy meals for my little one, but after a while I get stuck in a rut and end up doing things like oven chips and soup. If you have it all down in front of you, like 'this is what you do for breakfast/dinner/tea on day 1, this is what you do on day 2' etc then it will be easier to plan ahead and get the ingredients.
Another thing is, it could be all recipes that mners have thought up themselves so there wouldn't necesserily be a copyright issue.

Munz · 03/10/2006 19:39

lol, I never see that one.

yes WW - it's quite odd - I wonder if the towers are watching/home tonight??

as u say if mum never taught u how to do proper meals then it would help - and without moaning about my age group as there's some fab ones of us about a lot of the younger folks do tend to do the whole chuck it away society and pre packed process stuff cos they don't know how to do anything differnt (not saying I don't use that but when I was looking for a new cook book there was about 10 that I wanted to cover the stuff I fancied, so i'm thinking the one book to cover everythign iycwim)

I guess there wouldn't be much of a copywrite issue then - obviosuly the towers would look into it as we don't want em getting into any more legal troubles!

As well as an mn tip at the top/bottom of each page, you couls also have a 'quote of the day/week' about parenthood so you have something to chuckle about while you are cooking.

foxinsocks · 03/10/2006 19:42

I have a great lamb curry recipe

iamapieceofcheesecake · 03/10/2006 19:45

A new thread should be started specifically for mn recipes and then at the end of a decided period someone culd be allocated to pick through the best and then the book could be compiled.

foxinsocks · 03/10/2006 19:46

picking the best? now that's really asking for an argument

Munz · 03/10/2006 19:47

lol, cheese cake, should we consult towers bout it or just get on with it? I think it's a fabby idea, (andf if anyone has a mild curry recipe it would be fab)

see I don't know how do to sauces for pasta etc so end up buying the jars which are prob full of salt and god knows what else, so those wi=ould be ogod to know.

I think that deciding who and what goes in would be a bit of a minefield and I would reccommend just having a huge name-check type thankyou thing at the front. And copyright isn't a huge problem with recipes as long as they aren't absolutely verbatim and they won't be as each one would have to be tested so as to make sure it worked.

poppiesinaline · 03/10/2006 19:58

How about a book with all the best MN threads in?

You know, they do the 'what children say' quote books how about a 'what MNetters say - the best quotes' book

Why are we raising money anyway?

iamapieceofcheesecake · 03/10/2006 20:22

I think consult towers. Ooh, I can't wait to try out all those new recipes!!

heavenis · 03/10/2006 20:25

Munz have you been away from MN for a while I haven't seen you around and today your every where.

I like the idea of a book or two.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 03/10/2006 21:12

Written for mums, by mums!!!! Could you get a better selling point?

We could have a whole series on all topics - I think it's a fab idea. And I presume money could go to well chosen, appropriate charities or to help out with the odd lawsuit

Flamebat · 04/10/2006 07:53

I like the idea of basics... Like Tamba's "how do I cook a roast?" thread - I can cook, but I don't know HOW to cook many things, and all the recipe books I have involve insane amount of specialist ingredients etc and take 12 hours to prepare.

A book with everyday meals, lunchbox idea etc sounds great.

HauntedsandCastle · 04/10/2006 07:55

i think it could work, I mean we all must have at least 1 from scratch recipe each, right?

Munz · 04/10/2006 08:18

lol heavenis - ah finally got my act together in the new house! DH is away and the PIL are looking after the boy ! lol.

will consult the towers then to see whta they recon, but as flame says it's the idea of only using what's in the cupboard that most of us have the appeals to me cos all these JO/GR ones and that u need loads of stuff mainly expesive which u don't have/like.

incidently whom ever gave me ideas with the potatoe wedges did em l;ast night with paprika and basil - gotta say it they were fab - will do em again when DH comes home - can't waitt o try home meade pizza now as well.

also sometime's it's nice just to do something differnet for tea instead of the same old 6/7 meals you always seem to do.
