Can you tell me what the score is with posting a thread and saying you're only wanting it up for a while then you're going to get it deleted?

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 16:53

Just I was posting on a thread which has now been deleted or hidden until the MN team can take a look at it.

I have no issue with the OP of the thread (just to make that clear!) but they said from the get go that they were going to put the thread up just for a short time and then get it deleted.

I didn't think that was really how it was supposed to work?

Is it possible to get some clarification on this?

Thanks.

maths

Anyone can ask MNHQ to delete their thread.

MN will look at the thread and decide whether to do so or not.

Putting that it will be deleted in the OP is foolhardy, putting you are going to ask for it to be deleted makes sense - it gives people the option of posting or not. It doesn't mean MNHQ will delete it though, so it's a risk the OP takes.

Frankly, I think it's a good policy, upheld well.

NickiFury · 07/09/2014 18:36

Well if you had it would make me wonder why you're moaning about one thread being deleted rather than just being supportive and accepting that you may inconvenienced occasionally by the deletion of an "enjoyable" thread.

Mintyy · 07/09/2014 18:37

I was rather surprised by that too, op. I have been here since 2006 and didn't think it was the done thing - fair enough if you start a thread and then something happens later which means your anonymity might be compromised.

But putting it up temporarily and then asking HQ to delete it on demand is like asking them to supply a special service just for you. They notoriously don't have the manpower for instant modding either, especially at the weekends.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 07/09/2014 18:37

No I am not looking for a change in policy. I have said (about 10 times) that I think the policy is fine as it stands :)

Mintyy · 07/09/2014 18:38

Blimey, just read the thread! Its a perfectly legitimate question, why is op getting it in the neck?

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 18:38

When did I say that thread was "enjoyable" ?

OP posts:
NickiFury · 07/09/2014 18:39

"Frankly I think it's a good policy, upheld well"

Me too and in quite a few years on MN I have never seen threads be deleted at a whim. In fact I am not sure I have ever seen an OP say "I am only posting for a few hours etc". Obviously it did today but I can't understand why it's worthy of a while complaining thread?

Itsfab · 07/09/2014 18:39

If you were using the thread to work out your own issues and found it helpful why not post your own to carry on getting support? if you don't want to discuss personal stuff but want to gain from the replies it is a bit off to moan it has gone when you aren't willing to open up yourself.

walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 18:39

The point is you cannot start a thread and know for sure HQ will delete it.

That's not how MN works.

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 18:40

It'sfab I did start my own thread off the back of that one Confused was that the wrong thing too now?

OP posts:
NickiFury · 07/09/2014 18:41

She's not getting it in the neck. She's being disagreed with. As you say Mintyy you've never seen it before, me neither. This would indicate to me that it's an unusual thing. In my opinion it's more about being irritated that OP doesn't get to see how it all pans out than concerns about The Rules.

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 18:43

Nicki - you're wrong. I just thought it was "off" to start a thread and say you were going to get it deleted.

I didn't think it was in the spirit of the site or the "done thing" so I wanted to ask the question of HQ.

OP posts:
NickiFury · 07/09/2014 18:43

Maybe the OP was a new user? Maybe she didn't understand how MN works? Maybe she thought she could get it deleted on request? Does it really matter THAT much?

Mintyy · 07/09/2014 18:44

I didn't read it like that at all. Funny eh.

Mintyy · 07/09/2014 18:45

It doesn't really matter THAT much but I can't see the op has made a fuss of any kind. Why are YOU so worked up about it?

She just asked the fucking question.

Perfectly legit.

walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 18:45

This is site stuff, the OP is asking a question about the site.

There is no need to bite her bloody head off.

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 18:45

Maybe she is a new user Nicki and maybe in that case HQ need to clarify their guidelines because she seemed to think she could post a thread that would only be up for an hour or two and it would be deleted as soon as she asked for it to be deleted?

OP posts:
LatteLoverLovesLattes · 07/09/2014 18:46

maths you keep chopping and changing your mind about your motive for starting this thread. Maybe you need to decide which it is - that you don't think it should be allowed or that if it is allowed you want to do it.

NickiFury · 07/09/2014 18:46

And I just responded, perfectly legit.

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 18:48

I don't care whether HQ delete on demand or only delete rarely. I just think there's a disparity between what happens on the site / what posters like the one today THINK happens on the site and what the guidelines say and I would like to know the HQ stance.

That's all Confused

OP posts:
walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 18:49

I agree, math.

There might be new posters who saw that thread who now think that's how MN works. It has never worked like that.

walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 18:50

You can't say nowt on here anymore without someone jumping down your throat.

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 18:51

That was my motivation for starting the thread Confused maybe I didn't express it very well - tis Mumsnet's site, they can do whatever they like with regard to deletions but I think there is a disparity between the guidelines and what some posters think happens and I'd like to get a clear answer. If the policy has changed and is delete on demand, that's fine, if it's delete rarely, that's fine too, but I just want to know one way or another.

I Wondered about that one too. It did seem a very strange thing to say, and I do think that MNHQ could do worse than to clarify the 'rules' and how they uphold them.

The OP of that thread either didn't understand the site policy (so therefore it needs clarifying) or she was confident that her request would be granted (so the policy needs updating to reflect that).

This is a good thread, in that hopefully by asking the question other potential OPs of threads can understand the rules and make clearer decisions about whether to post threads that could have repercussions or not.

Not sure why that is a problem?

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 18:56

I don't think I have chopped and changed re my motives for starting the thread Confused
