High spend section in S&B

I'm feeling sleep deprived & grumpy but having just looked at a thread about spending £900 on a handbag I'm feeling slightly sickened. Whilst everyone is entitled to spend their money as they wish, it makes me feel horrible (jealous, sad etc) to read about people spending way more than I earn per month on something as trivial as a handbag.

Maybe if S&B had a high spend section, us mortals could hide it & then not feel quite so bad?

OP posts:

I don't have anywhere near that kind of money, but I love a good fantasy shopping thread.

I agree with your sentiment OP, but I don't think segregation is the way to go, I did snort though when someone came onto the the thread to defend the OP saying that £900 was actually only mid range for a bag....

I enjoy watching trashy YouTube hauls and 'whats in my bag'. More often than not those bags are Chanel, Balenciaga, Dior, LV. In some cases their bag cost more than my car. Maybe im a shallow cow but it doesnt really bother me what other people spend their dosh on.

How on earth do you cope seeing flashy cars, multi million pound houses in real life?

Ragwort · 23/08/2014 15:57

I am just as shocked that someone could spend £900 on a handbag - but then I am also shocked when someone says they can't afford £1 or whatever for a school mufti day.

That's what I like about Mumsnet I suppose - a huge range of views and opinions and always something new to think about Grin.

But I do agree with Pagwatch that the thread could have been titled a little more thoughtfully - and maybe some sort of acknowledgement that you would know you are very fortunate to be able to spend £900 on a handbag.

And I do hate the comments that say 'I work very hard for my salary' - I am sure we all work very hard for our salaries - whether we earn the minimum wage or £100k plus.

And, you dont know whether the individual wanting to spend big on that bag has been saving every spare penny she had for the last year. (Havent read the original thread). She could go on to use that bag for the next ten years, which on a cost per wear basis, makes much more sense than those stinky plastic bags from Primark for £8 which will be in landfill by Crimble.

Sleepyhoglet · 23/08/2014 15:58

I don't have £900 for a handbag. (Felt guilty buying my leather storksak though) but I can enjoy living vicariously through other people! A high spend section might be good but is it unnecessary and create to many topics to follow

But I don't see that saying you're looking for prada or gucci is more tactful than saying what your actual budget is?

I posted once specifically about chanel handbags as that's what I wanted comments on, I didn't mention the price though. And I'm not that person who posted about the chanel bags that some random bloke bought her - remember that thread, it went nuclear!

To be honest, I'd never post on here any more asking for a viewpoint on anything that cost more than £25 as just can't be doing with the comments. But like tethers I do love a bit of virtual shopping on behalf of others Smile

I think the s&b section can be very helpful and supportive and have made some really lovely friends through it. But I wouldn't want anything I posted to make anyone feel bad.

Pagwatch · 23/08/2014 17:26

Maybe I speed check active convos differently then MrsCampbellBlack. Thread titles with money in jump out, as do thread titles with profanity for some reason.
I would easily scroll past a thread title with Prada in it but I notice threads with money in, as I suspect anyone for whom money is an issue does .

I don't know - I got my arse roasted for asking about repairing my louboutins but I personally just think that avoiding specific amounts in thread titles is a bit more...discreet.

MrsCampbellBlack · 23/08/2014 17:46

I remember your Louboutin thread Smile

I guess as I like prada etc, you wouldn't need to post the price for me to be aware of what rough amount of money you were talking about. But I appreciate not everyone is as interested in bags as me.

But I certainly wouldn't ever start a thread on here now about anything designer, its just not worth it.
