I'm obviously incredibly relieved. But massively disturbed. How did that happen? Is SP ok?
RowanMumsnet · 24/02/2014 18:22
@ParsingFancy
Yes, it was absolutely a troll we're afraid (although of course we're also very glad that it wasn't 'true')
It wasn't a name anyone would have recognised, tbh; certainly not a 'big name' poster. Just someone who keeps re-regging to post threads about being bereaved. This is the fifth or sixth time we've banned them. We do all we can to stop returning trolls like this and we're sorry that some of them slip through.
RowanMumsnet · 24/02/2014 18:24
@HyvaPaiva
Yes, it's a horrible development and we're not aware of them doing this before.
RowanMumsnet · 24/02/2014 18:27
@IamtheZombie
Not sure which speculation you mean, but we'd be really surprised if any of you had even registered this poster's previous incarnations/names - they tended to get zapped pretty quickly. Certainly (to reiterate) we have no reason to associate this particular troll with any infamous/well-known PBP.
RowanMumsnet · 24/02/2014 18:34
@everlong
She didn't - there was one character that was different.

@Lottiedoubtie
I agree, I'm not bothered about a name and shame or anything public on the site (presumably if they pop up again you'd just delete them again anyway) but it'd be nice to think that such a sick troll would at least get a visit from the police.
Tbh this is a new one on us and we can't say right now whether/what further steps we might take.
JustineMumsnet · 24/02/2014 19:24
Under Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 it is an offence to ‘send by means of a public electronic communications network a message or other matter that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character’. Trolls can also be charged if, for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to another, they send an electronic message which they know is false.
We'd certainly be happy to make available the info we have to the police in this instance (as far as I'm concerned there is no longer need to worry about data protection once someone's so clearly in breach of our site rules), with the proviso that SP is ok with us doing so. We'll just check on that first. Will keep you posted.
JustineMumsnet · 25/02/2014 12:50
I can confirm that we've contacted the police and they'll be coming to speak to us today or tomorrow.
KateSMumsnet · 27/02/2014 11:41
Hi folks,
Just to let you know we spoke to the police yesterday, and they will be getting in touch with the appropriate team who deal with this sort of thing.
SarahMumsnet · 03/03/2014 14:18
Hey everyone, just to update you - the police have come back to us and said that they've recorded this as an offence under the Telecommunications Act. The offence is:
Cause to be sent by public communication network a false message to cause annoyance / inconvenience / anxiety
They're now looking into the possibility of identifying the perpetrator - we'll let you know as and when we hear anything more.
