Is it time to ban placemarking?

Any vaguely interesting thread fills up with rubberneckers who aren't contributing anything. Would it be a good idea to add "no placemarking" to the site rules?

If you keep track of such things for a first/second offence you can highlight watch this thread/bookmark/using browser bookmarks in the hope it will encourage more passive watching without supporting or engaging instead of the current way that emphasises how many people are watching someone else's life.

yes i hate the just placemarking and the very very annoying i have nothing to contribute just placemarking comments, because these have to be read to be disregarded. it does indeed ruin the flow of the thread.

However i dont mind the blanks or the . posts, becuase these can be skimmed and dont interfere with the main flow of the post.

i dont understand why blank posts are so frowned upon.

Sorry, but you're being ridiculous.
a) if you post on a open public forum, the. Anyone can read your posts.
b) there's the watch function anyway.
c) if you're interested in the subject but don't know what to post, why not place mark.
d) people often place mark so they can go back to the thread when they have more time to post something good.
e) HQ have enough in their hands with us lot and trolls to ban folk who watch threads.

No matter how many times 'watch this thread' was explained to them, they couldnt get to grips with it.

I agree that it's rude and can be really insensitive on some threads

But I'm not sure how you could enforce it, if it was banned then people would just post an inane comment which would have the same effect and there wouldn't be anyway of stopping that

The first 100 posts of the Christmas bargain threads were taken up with 'Thanks OP' as people place marked.

Then at least another 200 posts throughout the thread would be wasted as people used . Or 'marking place'.

Then the last 100 would be spent waiting for x to turn up and finish the thread.

Then they would congratulate themselves on filling up another whole thread of baragins.

It would be v v v handy if tech could add a bookmark function so you could plag where you'd got up to in a thread though. I always try to RTFT before posting but they can be quite epic and it's hard to find where you were up to.

I think some threads are definitely posted for entertainment (eg sporn threads but not all as gross as that!) so place marking can be understandable and not inappropriate. Or occasionally I have posted support near the beginning of a thread, not had anything useful to add but really wanted to know how the OP got on. Wouldn't mark my place in that situation but a bookmarking function that only you could see would be very handy.

There is a bookmark function but you need to use Mumsnet New I think (am a Classic user )

Big Area, if you hover your mouse over a post, in the bottom right hand corner it comes up 'bookmark'. Click on that and you will be taken back to that spot the next time you select that thread.

And therein lies the problem. IMO about 85% of the posts on this site are wasted but that doesn't mean I have the right to decree how others post. Nor would I want to.
