Perhaps it's time to suspend new registrations, MNHQ?

You reap what you sow, I fear.

Since penisbeaker, and SheffieldGuy, both of which were widely touted by Mumsnet themselves, we have had an influx of dubious posters.

Another couple of blokes looking for sex today, plus one persistent odious racist poster.

Would you consider suspending the ability of people to register until this all dies down?

Of course, that would also preclude anyone in need of help and support from joining, which would be a terrible shame.

And please stop linking and promoting such dubious posts/posters. It doesn't do anyone here any favours.

We're not TELLING them. We are strongly advising them.

By the time we get to telling them, buns are flying.

ChippingInWadesIn · 11/01/2014 20:25

No - navada you are right, posters can't tell site owners how to run their site, but they can tell them how they SHOULD run their site Wink

BIWI - I totally agree something needs to be done, but I'm not sure that not letting anyone register is the answer. I think maybe having someone permanently on to 'delete' these threads ASAP (enough people reported it quickly!) and/or moderated before posting, posts only until you have posted for a set period. Of course this will need enough staff, which shouldn't be an issue as MN is clearly getting a lot of traffic and should be charging a fecking fortune for advertising.

HoneyDragon · 11/01/2014 20:26

I think BIWIs suggestion is a good one! just until MNHQ can be trusted not to use social media as a perverted troll klaxon.

stickysausages · 11/01/2014 20:27

You can't suspend registrations! As above, people needing help would be prevented from asking for it :(

However, the mods need to step up and be quicker off the mark

LoveBeingCantThinkOfAName · 11/01/2014 20:27

Never gonna happen, and really don't think it needs too.

It's not mn printing that's caused this it's tge DM writing about them tgat does it. They are having another phase of talking about us.

Fontofnowt · 11/01/2014 20:28

Maybe extra staff for the next day or two to nip it in the bud.

ChippingInWadesIn · 11/01/2014 20:28

I haven't seen the racist poster. Another joy to behold.

I do wish they would all fuck off and when they get there fuck off again.

HereIsMee · 11/01/2014 20:29

I actually found myself reporting one of those posts for "stupidity" as I really couldn't believe anyone could reasonably think it was okay to post such $*. But I think it's an over reaction to block new posters. Maybe have some kind of censoring for a certain number of posts. I've used forums where new members had to wait for mods to allow their first 10 posts or so.

NotAnotherPackedLunchBox · 11/01/2014 20:30

Would it be possible to have a threshold where new registrations are delayed if there is a significant spike in the number of new registrations which possibly indicates an invasion such as we're currently enduring?

HoneyDragon · 11/01/2014 20:31

Who the hell is going to ask for help tonight?

I think they would run a mile, what with the potential advisors either wanting to show them their upstanding site membership, or suggesting they'll feel better if they try a light dose of anti semitism.

AhoyMcCoy · 11/01/2014 20:31

It seems the most amount of MN staff seem to work Mon-Fri 9-5. But surely the site's busy times are fri/sat nights? Why does it seem that during these times it consistently takes in excess of an hour to remove racist posts with many many reports? It would be really interesting to see some sort of stats that reflect staff working hours vs active users on site. Or something.

Better moderation is what is needed IMVHO, not suspending registration.

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 11/01/2014 20:31

The latest racist thread is still there. And I cant stop arguing because it is so disgusting. Even though I know I should walk away, I just cant leave racism unchallenged.
why is it still there, thats the thing.

HoneyDragon · 11/01/2014 20:32

They don't need to do it for long, and often suspend regs when we are being invaded.

You just don't notice as you are already here.

KatyMac · 11/01/2014 20:32

I know ISeeYouShiverWithAntici & I have reported it multiple times

I hope that they are leaving it up to ban the ISP address, but I'd like to be told that

TippiShagpile · 11/01/2014 20:32

Applauds BIWI.

Spot on.

navada · 11/01/2014 20:33

But advertisers want sites with millions of hits, & I doubt they scrutinise the site minute by minute to see what's going on, or whether a weirdo from Sheffield is generating 1000's of those hits.

OodlesofOods · 11/01/2014 20:36

How about delayed membership? Sign up and takes an hour or something to be able to post. Though still might feel too long to those looking for help it might put off the drunk invaders.

HoneyDragon · 11/01/2014 20:40

How about a permanently delayed membership for those wanting to display their members?

Helpyourself · 11/01/2014 20:41

3 ideas:
Don't publicise dubious posts- penisbeaker, Sheffield Guy.
Moderate! FFS. It is not good enough to leave posts like those from tonight's racist twat for so long. It's irresponsible and quite frankly disrespectful to Mumsnet users.
If you can't monitor posts and react to reported posts more quickly can you have an auto lock or hide feature? If a post gets more than 5/10/15 whatever reports its hidden until it can be assessed.

BIWI · 11/01/2014 20:43

I agree, personally, that it's too harsh to suspend new registrations.

But really, unless MNHQ are going to start responding more quickly ...

Anyone else miss HelenMN?

BackOnlyBriefly · 11/01/2014 20:56

A lot of us on the racist thread have asked for it to stand. Partly because it's funny and partly because ridicule is a weapon against this kind of thing. People should be embarrassed at holding these views.

It's a matter of opinion and I get that not everyone sees it the same way.

OodlesofOods · 11/01/2014 20:56

Could pictures be suspended for 24 hours or something for new members?

HoneyDragon · 11/01/2014 21:00

at pictures suspended for new members.
