A long time ago, in a very long thread, there was a discussion about the PM's 'cute idea' (along with some silly MP), to introduce, by voluntary means if possible, or legislation if not, a so-called "Porn Filter".
Initially, MN backed the idea, unaware of several flaws in it. After much discussion, MNHQ did a U-turn, because parental education rather than a sledgehammer approach (which may end up missing the nut, anyway), was seen to be a better way for reducing the likelihood of some nasty shocks, and could cover a wide range of topics which may be found on the internet, of dubious taste / benefit to viewers.
article online (*) considers the "BT Broadband" "Porn Filter"...
Now, to my knowledge this is the first item from New Statesman that I've ever seen, but whatever the political or other slants NS may have that might deem it objectionable (I'm guessing, in case someone compares it with the Daily Mail or Nuts, or whatever, and decides it's rubbish), but it caught my eye when I saw
a) that filtering (not this one) is responsible for blocking Childline and Refuge
b) that while this is mostly about the BT filtering facility, it gives a hint of the way things could go, with blocks on sites from many different categories.
c) in the comments, someone has pointed out there's a Chrome browser extension called GoAwayCameron which apparently assists one to bypass these blocks (at least for now).
So glad there was the discussion, and MNHQ saw the error of using this method to attempt to block porn (etc). MNHQ may be a little miffed that there was a photo of the PM with someone from Netmums, but then again, given the mixed reception so far (a fair bit negative, from the IT press), MNHQ is probably well out of it...
The PM could end up with egg on his face over this one, if it shows up in a few months to have been a failure, blocking some important resource sites alongside those which can justifiably be classed as 'unsuitable' for viewing.
