SN thread appearing in 'most active' - they didn't used to did they?

I think I'm remembering this right and threads in SN don't appear in 'most active'. I just clicked on something in most active and it was in SN Chat. I am probably getting this completely wrong and am going to look a bit dim for questioning it...

I thought you had to opt in to it.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 04/06/2013 11:02

It appears on mine because I have ticked the box.

SolomanDaisy · 04/06/2013 11:42

Ah, maybe I have accidentally ticked a box Blush. I'll go and check.

I ticked the box so it appears on mine too. My DS is autistic and although I mainly lurk there I find it really useful.

SolomanDaisy · 04/06/2013 11:50

Yes, sorry I wasn't questioning it's usefulness, just that I thought the messages didn't appear on active threads to make them more private. I can't find the box I might have ticked, which is probably a good sign that I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I've never understood what this SN segregation was all about anyway. Not very progressive to have a whole section of society designated as optional.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 04/06/2013 12:10

It was done because we were pig sick of ignorant bastards seeing our threads on active convos and leaping in with their nasty comments on stuff they know nothing about.

Up to and including that our children are a burden on society and should be killed. Yes. Really.

So many people on the sn boards didn't really want to lay ourselves open quite so much to the hard of thinking.

People can opt in and do. People can look at the section and do.

But it does offer some small buffer between people actually having and caring for children with disabilities and the utter bastards out there on the internet who pile in with their shitty comments.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 04/06/2013 12:17

Yes, what Hec said

wonderingagain · 04/06/2013 12:18

I vaguely remember that was the reason but I think it would be better to deal with disablist bullying in the same way that you would deal with the racist stuff that appears on the immigration threads.

I can understand, being a SN parent myself, how hugely offensive and soul-destroying it can be as I am emotionally exhausted at the best of times, but I would still prefer to fight the fight on open ground in the hope that someone can learn from it.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 04/06/2013 12:23

Yes yes yes but to be frank, been there done that.

Now, not trying to shut down debate ofc, but why should posters be educating others, we left that notion behind a long time ago.

wonderingagain · 04/06/2013 12:24

Ok I don't really care that much but I'm a principled mare. Smile

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 04/06/2013 12:35

I used to say that. There's probably hundreds of threads out there with me banging on about how we should challenge ignorance. I remember getting into debate with 2shoes about it. Grin I was where you are and she was where I am now.

There are so many ignorant sacks of shit in the world and we will drive ourselves crazy trying to educate them. They don't care and they never will. You go round in circles having the same conversation over and over and over and it will never make a difference. They just keep coming.

so now I no longer stand up and say we should challenge these people until they see the error of their ways.

Never going to happen and it was just so exhausting.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 04/06/2013 12:36

Blush I don't mean you're banging on. I just meant I was.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 04/06/2013 12:53

I spend a fair amount of my time in RL having to fight these battles and do my little bit to enlighten the uninformed-yet-opinionated brigade, so I appreciate having somewhere on here where I don't have to explain myself and educate people every time the subject comes up.

gnushoes · 04/06/2013 13:54

Lurker here. I have learned a lot from the SN threads, things that it would be hard or impossible to discover any other way. I hope I am more thoughtful as a result.

GoblinGranny · 04/06/2013 13:58

wonderingagain, I think that it's essential to have the SN section as opt in for all the reasons stated.
However I do stomp around the site attempting to educate people, challenging disabilist crap and fighting on open ground.
Then I come back to the SN section and have a Brew
