trolls

Last night's troll made me feel physically sick and yes I was one of the people that automatically reported and wrote a reply saying how sick they were.
I know it is feeding them hence this thread.

Does anyone agree that if a thread is reported that said thread should be automatically frozen and no one can reply but can still report. I had to vent myself at the specific moment in time and that is exactly what they want.

Sorry if this has been asked before im not a frequent MNer.

Yes, I get an email every time I report. It is sometimes days later (and the email more often than not apologises for the delay in responding).

Lucyellensmum95 · 15/04/2013 18:00

I agree that it should be not-post, hide and report and i do this if my spidey senses are triggered however sometimes it is not until the OP has drip fed a few more dubious details that people realise that things aren't as they should be.

What is FWR??

usualsuspect · 15/04/2013 18:01

I always get an email back from a report

Lucyellensmum95 · 15/04/2013 18:02

I get an email, but all that it said was that MNHQ would look into it - or keep a close eye. Am i to assume then that as i didn't recieve a further email that they considered it to be legitimate?

Lucyellensmum95 · 15/04/2013 18:02

not that i feel entitled to an explanation of course but i don't like to suspect someone of saying something dubious if i am wrong.

RandallPinkFloyd · 15/04/2013 18:02

That was by far the worst trolling I have ever seen on here, really terrible.

(I'm guilty of posting on it too, it was a gut reaction and I know better. Not my finest hour.)

I don't think there's anything major that needs to be done about it though. The reports worked and it was nixed very quickly.

I definitely don't think some posters should have more sway regarding deletions than others. I can't see how that would work.

Sadly trolls are just part of life. All we should do is report and ignore. The less reaction the better.

K8Middleton · 15/04/2013 18:06

Yes I wish people would show a bit of restraint and not post on sick troll threads. It just keeps it visible on active convos.

That said hilarious trolls please do post. I do like to see the funny ones.

AmandaPayneAteTooMuchChocolate · 15/04/2013 18:07

I actually started a thread, prompted by that one yesterday, about enabling people who have 'watched' a thread to see the deletion message. That would enable you to see what happened without getting involved. They said it's on Tech's list already!

I think freezing threads would be counter-productive. Sometimes on a contentious topic there might be dozens of reports. Imagine either side on some of the vaccination debates. Wouldn't be hard for 20 people to report something to try and freeze out a thread (not casting aspersions on either side in those debates, just trying to think of something where there are established posters on both sides of an emotive debate and that sprang to mind).

We get a lot of trolls on FWR and I think we all just need to be more disciplined with ourselves about ignoring.

QuintessentialOHara · 15/04/2013 18:10

I did not post on that thread but reported it.

My tactics for trying to get it out of active convos was to head into Unanswered threads, and get as many new fresh content in!

Suggest we all do that..... Flood active convos with new threads.

HoneyDragon · 15/04/2013 18:13

Quint, that is a genius idea. I reported and didn't pst. But I too will do that from now on.

HelenMumsnet · 15/04/2013 18:13

Sounds like you were the first to report then, Lucyeleensmum95! We clearly did then look into it - and nixed.

usualsuspect · 15/04/2013 18:13

I am guilty of poster on some obvious troll threads.

Often to derail them, but I know I should just report and not post.

usualsuspect · 15/04/2013 18:14

posting not poster*

usualsuspect · 15/04/2013 18:14

I'm not a poster of troll threads Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 15/04/2013 18:20

I missed last night's troll thread thank goodness, it sounds horrendous Sad

I did pop onto FWR yesterday after a bit of a break and saw that our old visitor was back. I've lost count of the number of times he's re-registered and trolled now. I wish there was a way of more permanently getting rid of him but I appreciate the technical difficulties.

Tee2072 · 15/04/2013 18:21

We know you actually are usual. You can't lie to us. ::taps nose:: Grin

Quint that's a great idea!

mumof2aimingfor4 · 15/04/2013 18:25

Quint I like your suggestion. Will do that if the need unfortunately arises.

Would it be worth having a think about formalising a policy on this? And maybe reading it out in assembly emailing all members (tagged onto a Parenting news?) so that we have a cohrsive approach?

Pan · 15/04/2013 18:29

But Helen, saying "try" to not post sounds a lot like 'try to stick to TG generally, but if you really can't then that's fine'. Well,...a bit.

Tumbleweed is indeed a tricky cove to post against, so shouldn't HQ be a little bit more on the front foot in reminding posters of TG rools re trolls and not feeding them - feeding them means they hang around more and get some mateys to do the same. Which ISN'T in the spirit of the site.
that would be a tonic and slice of lemon

Pan · 15/04/2013 18:32

Helen in stern Head Teacher garb.......hmmm.

HoneyDragon · 15/04/2013 18:35

Yeah but it's a fine balance Pan.

We, the nice, like here as its hardly moderated

As do the sick fucks.

I do think at present for such a massive site the cohesive relationship between HQ and its users still is effective against the abusers, not to warrant and major changes. Although stepping up the night shift might help Wink

Tee2072 · 15/04/2013 18:36

And ice, Pan. You forgot the ice.

HoneyDragon · 15/04/2013 18:36
Lucyellensmum95 · 15/04/2013 19:05

Helen, it wasn't the thread that eveyrone is talking about here - it doesn't matter, its not important :)

Pan · 15/04/2013 19:44

jeez. it was a contemplative hmmm about the use of the correct analogy for the ocassion. lordy, obsessed or what.........?? pheew that took ages

But still, isn't troll-feeding against TG, and whilst it's understandable to suggest where they should go, it's immensely counter-productive and should be actively discouraged....
