Why is there a tweet button on all my threads?

Even when I'm logged in, so the bloody Facebook thing doesn't appear.

And now there's tweeting everywhere.

I like to keep my social media separate, and definitely don't want to accidentally tweet on my work related account about stuff with my MN name.

And yes I have fat fingers and will probably do it by accident.

HelenMumsnet · 07/03/2013 21:21

Yes, hello, you can def turn the Tweet button off in Customise, if you wish.

We can also reassure all the fat of finger that it's a two-stage Tweeting process, so it's actually pretty hard to Tweet a thread by accident.

Morning.

You can find Customise (which you can use to hide the Facebook button, too) by looking up to the double line of blue links below the big black Mumsnet Talk header and above the Topic header.

On the top line of blue links (directly above the line of blue links that link to Active, I'm On etc), the first link on the left is to Customise.

There are no Twitter/Facebook buttons on Miscarriage threads.

@TheSeniorWrangler

Why are these thing default ON?

Surely you should tell us that its been added and we can switch it on if we want?

Why should the onus be on on to have to go to customise to turn the damn thing off?

Well, it wouldn't really make much sense to add a new feature and then make it not visible by default.

We do realise that the Tweet button is not for everyone - which is why you can customise it out of sight - but we also think lots of people will like it.

@EuroShaggleton

Please remove it from Conception. Most posters on there would be horrified to share their conception woes with friends/family work colleagues through an accidental slip of the finder. Come on.

It's extremely hard to Tweet a thread by accident - because it's a two-step process. If you hit the button/link by mistake, you can cancel it immediately on the box that pops up.

It works almost exactly like the Facebook button, which we've now had for almost a year with no known instances of anyone making a Facebook update by mistake.

@GinSoaked

Yes please can it be removed from conception? I don't like the judgement call that it's not on miscarriage but is in the other ttc threads. Who would want to share details of their ivf cycles or last period? I understand that for some talk threads it's a great feature, but surely not for those ttc...

We hear what you're saying, GinSoaked. But really nothing has changed.

Folks have been able to Tweet from a Conception threads for years now, using the Viewport bar - or, if they really want to, by cutting and pasting a thread url into Twitter manually.

Similarly, there's been a Facebook button on Conception for many months now.

And, as far as we know, no one has had their IVF-cycle details splashed all over anywhere.

And do please remember that Mumsnet is an open forum that is indexed by Google. If folks are going to post up private details, they should be aware that those details are likely very findable through a quick Google Search - and that's a far more likely scenario than them being seen on an one-off Tweet or Facebook update.

It's great that we all find huge support and comfort from sharing our experiences but we should all take care never to post up stuff we wouldn't want others to find.
