Mumsnet depresses me......................................

All I seem to read about is mums who cook loads of great, varied home made meals their kids actually eat, kids who have nutritious, tasty packed lunches with things in it even I wouldn't touch, people who have cleaners and nannies etc etc.

Where are all the ordinary mums who have a battle with their kids most meal times, struggle to get their kids to eat anything other than toast or a ham sandwich, don't cook and freeze in bulk as their tiny freezer is too small, don't plan their homecooked meals a month in advance as life is boring enough without knowing what you@re getting for dinner 2 weeks on Tuesday??

Probably it's just me, maybe everyone else is super and organised and wonderful.

I always laugh at the extremeists who for example wash towels after one use, clean the kitchen floor several times a day, cook from scratch for every meal and so on.

I do it my way, in my intermittent fashion and I'm happy with my lifestyle.

Each to their own I say.Smile

waterfalls · 18/03/2006 10:40

I mop my kitchen floor several times a day, and hoover several times a dayBlush still looks like a sh"t hole thoughGrin

waterfalls · 18/03/2006 10:42

But I was a housekeeper, before kids, just cant shake the habitSmile

iota · 18/03/2006 10:42

waterfalls - I mop and hoover about once a week Grin

LadyTophamHatt · 18/03/2006 10:43

waterfalls,
"several times a day"

Hoovering and mopping??

you're joking right?

waterfalls · 18/03/2006 10:44

lol, Upstairs I hoover once a week, but the hoovers never put away downstairs.

helsy · 18/03/2006 10:44

I don't think you read the posts properly ssd.

waterfalls · 18/03/2006 10:45

Erm..............No, not joking I'm afraidBlush

WideWebWitch · 18/03/2006 10:45

I think there are a lot of people here talking about trying to do their best and sometimes (often?) failing. And a lot of people doing well at some things and not at others, as hmb says. So mumsnet doesn't depress me, the oppostite in fact. It often makes me laugh, a lot.

IMO something can only make you (one, I mean, not specifically you ssd) feel inadequate if some sense of inadequacy is already there. In fact, I bet if you started a thread saying 'where are all the xyz mums?' you'd get a response.

iota · 18/03/2006 10:45

waterfalls - that's about 20 more lots of hoovering than I do in a wek - think of all the time you could waste on mumsnet instead Grin

iota · 18/03/2006 10:46

yeah WWW - you might cook organic, but your oven's a disgrace Grin

WideWebWitch · 18/03/2006 10:50

Ha ha Iota, absolutely! And I'm CRAP at cleaning/tidying/being on a P(I)TA/not shouting at ds/lots of other things!

fairyfly · 18/03/2006 10:54

Hmmmm, a lot of people want to be seen in a certain light and it isn't always the truth behind doors. One of my friends is full of cr@p in the school playground, it makes me giggle. It's important to her what people think of her so she changes to suit the person shes talking to. When she gets home she puts the deep fat frier on and reaches for her vodka under the sink.

handlemecarefully · 18/03/2006 10:56

"I don't think you read the posts properly ssd"

That's about bang on target helsy I'd say!

Ha! I came upstairs to do some much needed tidying and there was an unexpected tilt in the earth's axis and I found myself magnectically drawn to the computer and..well...Grin
I love MN because of the diversity. For every yummy mummy, there is a slummy mummy! (I'm deffo more on the slummier side)
SSD, Sometimes I come across people who I think ''Wow! Wish I had your life'' but then you see their name on another thread and realise their kids have SN, or are very ill, or their relationship is crumbling or whatever and realise that like everyone you meet in RL, no-one has a totally perfect life. It's not depressing, it's rather comforting I think. And, like someone else said earlier, everyone has their 'thing'.

puff · 19/03/2006 16:16

hmmm, well I find if one thing is going brilliantly eg, masses of nutritional meals, bulk freezer cooking etc, then something else has gotta give, so the house is a tip for a couple of days or the washing has piled up. I pride myself on my multi-tasking abilities but I ain't no Wonderwoman (although I look a little like her Wink.

Tortington · 19/03/2006 16:50

dont think its really about home cooked meals but the perception of self and self worth when compared to others.

i've met mumsnetters who come over as being ever so perfect mum. very enlightening it is too. a great reminder that people post a side to them they want you to read. its not the full story. no-ones perfect and you have to do whatever gets you through the day.

look theres always something to feel guilty about as a parent. dont measure yourself against other people. measure yourself against the happiness of your kids. now go outside immediatley and have a water fight. - then eat microwave pizza for tea.

we're having hotdogs btw.

Pinotmum · 19/03/2006 16:58

ssd - I'm here! I'm an adequate mother if I'm feeling generous to myself, who juggles it all and is not the best at anything. I try the healthy dinner only to balls it up with the cakes and biscuits later and they're shop bought; or give choc spread sarnies cos the butter ran out for the cheese ones. I give the same dinner 2 nights on the run cos I haven't planned ahead and bought food. I can never get ahead on the washing and ironing. But then everyone likes me cos I make them feel organised Smile

Blandmum · 19/03/2006 17:01

We are going to have a full cooked sunday roast, but my house is a total shit hole, and I have ignored the kids all afternoon to do some marking....mad and bad mummy!

beansontoast · 19/03/2006 17:03

you see what you want to see...

and you wont see much of me cos im generally a lurkerSmileand as a lurker i like it when people like you post 'ffs!'on absurd foodie threads.

Fullmoonfiend · 19/03/2006 17:05

Hello Beans, well done for breaking out!

Tortington · 19/03/2006 17:13

beans always have to come out one way or another :)

SleepyJess · 19/03/2006 17:28

No ssd I am crap and disorganised. There is so much waste paper on my carpet (that has been there since yesterday!) that I have only just seen a letter to me (opened and not by me!) telling me I have been selected as a possible bone marrow donor for someone!! It could have ended up binned, chewed up (by DS2 who likes to eat paper) or even shat upon! It could have cost someone their life!!

Does that make you feel better?? Grin

Blandmum · 19/03/2006 17:31

bless you for being on the BM regester!

Dh might need one one day, he has a match in his bro, thankfully. But people like you are solid gold!
