So, is mn anti scottish?

NaturalNatures · 08/07/2012 00:45

I've had a few pains with mn recently, I didn't think anything of it, just normal hitches and stuff.

But I've just seen all the anti murray, scots/english hate threads and was just wondering if this is the general consensus of mn.

See, I've been physically attacked by scots for being english and by english for being scots. I usually take them to be the more ignorant in society.

I took mn to be the more intelligent.

I'm a bit stupid aren't I?

No it isn't.

SkipTheLightFanjango · 08/07/2012 01:05

Individual posters maybe. MN not! Go Murray!Grin

FiftyShadesofViper · 08/07/2012 01:06

How would anybody know? unless they had a copy of the fabled spreadsheet

Cheriefroufrou · 08/07/2012 01:08

mmm there's probably some who are, but I don't think there is an overall vibe and I'ld guess I'ld probably notice if there were being a fellow celt

Theres a lot of "not being racist but" ignorant generalisations about immigrants , we're all the same apparently - transient job/benefit thieves rather than genuine contributers to the community who are responsible for everything thats wrong with the NHS - its not the politicians fault for messing with it, its our fault for using it after paying into it for years as well as working for it all the hours

Chubfuddler · 08/07/2012 01:09

No.

HTH.

NaturalNatures · 08/07/2012 01:28

Ah insidious racism, that would explain a lot.

I definitely don't think that MN is anti-Scottish!

I managed to get myself entangled in a heated Andy Murray thread when will I learn but I tend to think that any issues on that thread were cultural misunderstandings rather than racism.

For exam

PrettyCherryTrees · 08/07/2012 01:48

Oops!

For example I was astounded by the number of posters getting hey up by Andy Murray's post match interview comment about not caring how his parents felt watching him. To a Scottish ear that was a joke but it obviously didn't translate well (presumably because he didn't smile when he said it?).

Besides there's loads of Scots on Mumsnet and we're a feisty bunch so even if there was any wee but if racism it would be unlikely to remain unchallenged.

PrettyCherryTrees · 08/07/2012 01:50

Goodness me typos sneaking in all over that post Blush

^ het up
^ "any wee bit of racism"

LadyWidmerpool · 08/07/2012 02:19

No

mrscumberbatch · 08/07/2012 02:27

I don't think so. I am Scottish and couldn't give a shite what Andy Murray says.

I think sometimes we get disregarded as a lot of English posters seem to think we're all teuchters. (Not that there's anything wrong with being a teuchter mind!!)

Thumbwitch · 08/07/2012 02:43

I wouldn't have thought so - there are a lot of Scottish posters on here anyway, so it would be hard for the whole site to be anti-Scottish!

There is ignorance and bigotry at all levels of society and in all countries that form the UK - but it's down to individual's behaviours and choices, not the site (or even country) as a whole.

No more than it's Anti-American.

Oh wait...

exoticfruits · 08/07/2012 06:55

MN isn't collectively anything. As soon as one person posts something the next will disagree!

Cheriefroufrou · 08/07/2012 17:09

yeah it is quite anti-American, its all over a LOT of threads
not noticed the scotish thing though

Cheriefroufrou · 08/07/2012 17:12

and where there are other individuals on here that are anti X, Y or Z, they get challenged by someone who doesn't agree
but the anti american comments rarely get challenged, its just like its a normal part of the language of this forum

Cheriefroufrou · 08/07/2012 17:13

to me thats the difference between the forum in general being anti something, and it just being an individual or two or three - whether anyone else picks up on it or challenges it!

NaturalNatures · 08/07/2012 19:22

Cherie, that's a good point about anti american.

Thankyou everyone, being on both sides of the cultural divide mixed heritage I just see where it crosses over in rl too much so I'm being a bit picky and apologise for any hysterics.

Thumbwitch · 09/07/2012 00:05

There is definitely an anti-AmericanISM feel to the thread - any thread that is posted about words/speech etc. will always bring up American ways of saying things; and there is a lot of anti-feeling towards things like baby showers etc.

But these are, IMO, parochial reactions to "non-British" ways - a lot of the things that are objected to are normal in other countries as well as the USA; Australia, for one. Many European countries if we look at the "money for wedding gifts" objection - it's not against any one country, it's just the "not us" reaction.

HelenMumsnet · 09/07/2012 11:41

Hello. In answer to the OP, we don't think MN is collectively anti-Scottish (or anti-American). We would be v concerned if that was so.

That said, we acknowledge that there may well be individual posts that express anti-Scottish (or anti-American) sentiment - and, as ever, if they are reported to us, we'll take a look.

Generally speaking, any reported post containing vile/ignorant/hateful generalisations about another race/culture/nation would be deleted.

TapirBackRider · 09/07/2012 17:18

MN isn't the borg; no collective think here.

LadyBeagleEyes · 09/07/2012 20:18

MN is definitely not anti Scottish.
Sadly there are quite a few posters that are.
Try starting a thread on Scottish independence.
I always end up hiding them.

mrscumberbatch · 09/07/2012 20:55

Even the Scots are torn about Scottish independence LadyBeagle. Tis a hot topic after a few drinks!
