Zombie has a couple of questions...

IamtheZombie · 14/03/2012 23:44

for Tech. They aren't urgent so Zombie doesn't mind if Tech takes a while to answer.

  1. Why do some codes work on MN while others don't?

1 (supplemental). Is there a way (other than trial and error) to work out which ones will work and which ones won't?

  1. Why is the default on the number of replies to show on TIO set at 18. Is this a mystical number of some sort?

Zombie thanks Tech for his attention in due course.

Oooh.

IamtheZombie · 18/03/2012 09:56

Zombie thinks Bumsy should look again. Zombie has ? and °. Just think of ° as a Polo ?.

Looking good to Zombie, Fids.

What's this one then please: §

(apologies for cheating by being on my phone)

Fiderer · 18/03/2012 10:10

Fids stockpiles I stockpile (it's contagious) Polos when in the UK.

No notes or suns yet. Must keep looking.

Meanwhile: ° ° ° ° °

(wip = worked in preview)

According to Mr Wikipedia, that is a Section Sign, Minnie.

Here you are Minnie. Read it carefully as there will be a short test at the end of the module.

It's a whole new world

Fiderer · 18/03/2012 10:19

Bet Zombie understands it all. All that knowledge acquired though assimilation.

IamtheZombie · 18/03/2012 10:22

Fid, the character set(s) supported on MN don't have the wingdingy type characters.

Zombie has played around a bit more and has learned that she does need to use the leading 0 where it appears in this list:

alt-codes.org/list/

in order to generate those characters. Otherwise she gets the characters in that number range from this list:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows-1252

It's still a bit of trial and error, but Zombie is learning.

Nagoo · 18/03/2012 10:33

Nobdies?

we makes a lot of use of that one, and I can't see it on the lists.

Am I still drunk, or is Tech holding something back.

IamtheZombie · 18/03/2012 10:36

? is 0153, Nagoo. Just 153 generates Ö.

OP posts:
Nagoo · 18/03/2012 10:40

Yes Zombie :) I think we need our own list...

IamtheZombie · 18/03/2012 11:00

Zombie is rapidly coming to the conclusion that the alt-codes.org/list/ is the one to use - with the following proviso:

The number range 1 - 32 on that list do NOT work as that range is reserved for control characters as shown on the Windows 1252 list.

Otherwise it appears that all the characters on the rest of the list can be generated. For the number ranges 128 - 255 and 0128 - 0255 it's the inclusion or exclusion of the leading 0 that determines which symbol is generated.

MinnieBar · 18/03/2012 11:15

Ooh, tis vair complicated. And I probably should have known that section one on some level as I copy-edit. On the computer. Blush

So, if you're on an iPhone what can you do? Seeing as I don't have an alt-key?

IamtheZombie · 18/03/2012 11:19

Zombie doesn't have an iPhone so can't really help.

Maybe there's an app?

OP posts:
Nagoo · 18/03/2012 11:26

nothing to do with anything, but can you see your messages on the iphone app? I am vair popular, and often need to respond privately to my many friends...

(sorry zombie)

IamtheZombie · 18/03/2012 11:29

No need to apologise, Nagoo.

Zombie doesn't own this thread. She merely gave birth to it and then sent it out to make it's way in the world of MN.

Maryz, if a symbol's not on the list, it won't work. Zombie tried to C&P the male and female symbols, but that doesn't work either.

Nagoo I gave up on the app as it has (IMHO) too many shortcomings, and I just use the mobile site in Safari instead, where you can indeed see your little envelope flashing when you've got a message or ten.

IamtheZombie · 18/03/2012 11:51

Maryz, the male and female symbols fall in the number range 1 - 32 on that list. Those codes do NOT work as they appear to be overridden by the normal Windows 1252 codes.

Simple language for Maryz: Only use the codes in the number ranges 33 - 255 and the additional codes in the range 0128 - 0255.
