Mumsnet Co-Buying has launched this week. It works as follows: say lots of Mumsnetters want the same product - could be chocolate or cosmetics, could be gadgets or sports gear - then with Mumsnet Co-Buying the more of you who buy it, the cheaper the price becomes. In partnership with BuyaPowa, we'll feature different products each week. There will be a limited number of each product and each offer will last for a limited amount of time. For more information click here.
So we'd like to know what you'd like to see featured on Mumsnet Co-Buying.
Tell us here and we'll do our best to get the products you want.

Sorry about the link - we're looking into it :)

Tech · 28/02/2012 17:48

Hi ItsAllGoingToBeFine, Sorry about that. The link wasn't working from the mobile site. It should work now, though the page it links to is not mobile-optimized, so you might have to do a bit of scrolling. You shouldn't get an error though.

Thanks for your feedback so far. RatDesPaquerettes we will work to make the rules more prominent so everyone can see what they're signing up to. The principle behind this is, like any kind of bulk buying, the more a retailer sells, the cheaper they can afford to make a product. But we have spoken to Buyapowa and agreed that as a special one off on this first co-buy only, even if it doesn't get to 100 buyers we'll make the price £3 for everyone anyway. We are really keen to use this to get Mumsnetters great deals on products they want - so please do keep telling us what you'd like us to look into featuring in future.

Thanks for all of your comments so far - this is a trial to see how well it goes so it's really useful to have your feedback so we can make it better

Maryz - it is free p&p and you can hide your name from the leaderboard. Sorry that it's UK only - again we'll work on making that more prominent

DottyDot - sorry you found it unclear, we'll look at that. However you do have to put your payment card details in before it's actually bought - so please don't be worried about clicking just for info

ItsAllGoingToBeFine - I'll get it stickied now

QED - We asked the people at Buyapowa and they say:

"We do not take any money from your bank or PayPal account until the co-buy has closed. When you join a co-buy, your bank or PayPal will authorise your credit or debit card for the current price. This amount is ring-fenced (reserved) until the end of the co-buy, at which point, your account will be settled for the closing price."

@OneLieIn

Personally I don't want it. Mn is becoming v commercial, you are using the thoughts, posts of mners to build a business.

If you ask me (which you didn't) you are moving away from the very purpose of mn.

Hi OneLieIn,
The purpose of MN is to make parents lives easier. There are tonnes of ways we could have commercialised the site over the years most of which we've eschewed. We've been really careful to only go with things that don't contradict what our core aim is because frankly, we came up with that aim and it matters a lot to us. I think co-buying (and Mumsnet Swears By) work for MN precisely because they ought to make our lives easier - saving time and money - assuming of course that we get the choose the right products. Thanks to all for your thoughts here. We'll do our best to get the products you've asked for.

@TheLightPassenger

Am a bit bemused that MN seems to want to turn itself into Groupon Hmm, without the Groupon advantage of committing to one set price.

Hi TheLightPassenger,
If we'd wanted to turn ourselves into Groupon - we'd be sending you a mail a day advertising any old offer we could lay our hands on and most likely mining your data like crazy. We do however think that collating MNetters wisdom and buying power is a potentially useful thing we can do - which fits our purpose and hopefully helps us make a buck or two as well.

JustineMumsnet · 05/03/2012 11:56

@LemonDifficult

Would there be anyway to do an 'I'm in if it's x price'?

I'm all in favour of it as I think it's a good way to pay for all the people needed to police benignly watch over AIBU. I guess whether it will be good for MN users is still to see. If the chocolate comes shortdated, or all the offers turn out to be offloaded otherwise-in-the-sales type stuff then I think there's a risk that it'll just be a turn-off. It'd be a bit of a shame if MN started to feel less 'quality'

Will definitely as about alternative mechanisms - suspect it's how it works financially though - and pass on feedback re quality and name Smile.

QED - We just checked this out for you and Buyapowa say the following "When the customer joins the co-buy, their card/paypal is authorised at the price they joined at. No money is taken at this point ? the amount is simply ?reserved?. When the co-buy finishes, payment is taken at the final price (which could be different to the authorised price)." If this isn't what has happened please let us know and we'll get it looked into.

NessaRose - The chocolate, we've been told, is being dispatched today and tomorrow in first class post and will be with you either at the weekend or early next week depending on how fast the post is.

LemonDifficult and RatDesPaquerettes - we are working on making it more visible across the site - we'll get banners up and it linked from the navigation asap

LemonDifficult - we've also asked about the "I'm in if it's x price" and Buyapowa say the following
"We found that if you give the choice of only opting in when the co-buy hit best price, most would always select this option. The problem with this then comes if you don't get enough customers to hit the best price - no one gets their product. We also found that it could be quite confusing, in that people would enter their credit card details but then weren't sure whether they were going to get the product or not. As it stands today, if you enter the co-buy you are guaranteed to get it. The price you pay can obviously decrease. We ensure that the opening price always represents a discount from RRP, so that shoppers always get a deal even if they are the only person in a co-buy."

Thank you all for your feedback
