CAT Subscriptions

I think this is reasonable and fair that we should pay £5 for the ability to CAT.
Done my deed this morning.

OP posts:
ghosty · 16/01/2006 09:04

Do you mean over and above the subscription we already make?

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 16/01/2006 09:05

They are scrapping the subscriptions, and brining in the £5 ability to CAT thing.

I will do it tomorrow when i have some money!!!

ghosty · 16/01/2006 09:06

Oh I didn't know that ... was there an email or an announcement ... not that I mind but I didn't know ...

ghosty · 16/01/2006 09:07

Presumably we are not talking 5pounds PER CAT?

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 16/01/2006 09:07

email this morning. Mumsnet News thingy

munz · 16/01/2006 09:07

are they? but what about those who can't afford the £5, would it be monthly or yearly for a start? second if ppl couldn't afford it and some one wanted to CAT but couldn't then ppl would know who did/didn't pay.

munz · 16/01/2006 09:07

ooh not checked my emails today.

ghosty · 16/01/2006 09:08

Haven't checked emails yet ...

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 16/01/2006 09:08

£5 for the year.

I think most people can afford £5 for year and it is optional.

julienetmum · 16/01/2006 09:08

Is this with immediate effect? I have no problem with the rule but just wondered how long I have got left to CAT as at the moment I have to justify every penny spent.

tissy · 16/01/2006 09:08

what about those of us who have elected not to receive news emails, but have paid subscriptions?

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 16/01/2006 09:09

obviously if you dont pay it you cant use CAT, but come on girls, MN do forward our CATS all the time for nothing dont they!!! Ill be signing up because i think its a great way for MN to make a few bob.

munz · 16/01/2006 09:09

that's v reasonable then I think. with the subs althuo they say it's optional etc how much u pay I always felt obliged to pay more which we couldn't manage.

Furball · 16/01/2006 09:15

But what about those who have just paid their subs within the last few months? I paid more than £5 for my subs in November.

ladymuck · 16/01/2006 09:21

Well it does seem to have been activated already!

Shame that it doesn't seem to carry over from our previous subscriptions though. That sort of defeats the "good news" that our voluntary subs aren't needed any more. Have to say as a business model I prefer to pay a sub that does something, rather than the voluntary method. But I do hope that MN will review those who have been subscribing, and trasnfer their subs over to the CAT sub.

Flamesparrow · 16/01/2006 09:23

Is it to recieve CATs as well as send, or just to send?

tissy · 16/01/2006 09:24

please could MN copy the email onto this thread for those of us still in the dark?

ladymuck · 16/01/2006 09:24

If you try the CAT option it will give you the low down Tissy.

misdee · 16/01/2006 09:33

Dear Mumsnet member,

Another new year has stolen up on us and as we approach our sixth (yes sixth!) anniversary we thought it time to bring you up to date on site developments and some cheerier (deep breath) news about our finances.

We spent a lot of time licking our Mumsnet Best reviews into shape last year and with your help we think we've turned them into a pretty definitive guide to the best stuff available for new parents. We've also published them in hard copy form - Mumsnet Best is available free to pregnant and new mums from Mothercare stores - look out for Issue 2 in March.

Meantime Mumsnet membership has swelled to getting on for 50,000, and each month around 150,000 different folk pay us a visit. So we've grown into quite a community.

Many thanks as ever to everyone who's contributed to Mumsnet talk, which continues to be a vibrant, supportive place where you can always get an answer (whether you asked for one or not ) It's your postings that makes Mumsnet the place it is.

And a special word of thanks to the many who have subscribed - a true act of generosity, as you saw nothing extra for your money and one that really did keep Mumsnet online. However, we think it's time to take a deep breath, roll up our sleeves and call a halt to our voluntary subscription scheme (though please may we reserve the right to whip it down from the attic and dust it off at a later date if need be?) We're still a little way off turning a profit but there's enough blue sky on the horizon to make us cautiously optimistic that one day we might and we think it would be wrong to ask for your cash just in case.

Of course there are plenty of other ways you can ensure we'll never be back with our begging bowls and it would be remiss of us not to take the opportunity to list them here :

Shop using the affiliate buttons on the home page or around the site and use the buy it links on our product review pages.
Shop through our discount partners (not only do you get a good deal but usually we get a few coppers too).
Keep sending in product reviews (from pushchairs to days out, breast pumps to baby monitors).
Fill in the surveys that we occasionally host on the site.
Buy a Mumsnet book, something from the Mumsnet shop, or a pictory set.
Click on the banner ads around the site (if everyone clicked on an ad once a day or so our accountant would be much happier!)
Recommend us to all your mates... even your enemies.
And most importantly of all keep posting your great advice, tips and support and talk.
As a way of making up the shortfall we have decided to introduce a small annual fee - £5 - for the ability to CAT (contact another talker) for the year. We hope it's a small enough amount not to put you off sending CATs and of course all the rest of the site remains entirely free. Just click on CAT in the normal way and follow the instructions to register for the year.

For our part, we promise to keep bringing you more and better competitions, to keep compiling your wisdom into the best product reviews for parents out there and to keep upgrading talk to let the conversation flow even better.

So all that's left to say is thanks again and all the best for the year to all Mumsnetters and their families.

Justine, Carrie, Rachel, JJ and Tech

tissy · 16/01/2006 09:34

Hmm... understand the reasons behind it, but am a little cheesed off to find out about it like this... as flamesparrow asks, do we have to subscribe to receive or just to send? A MNer may need some info urgently (and privately) and may not be in a position to subscribe.

tissy · 16/01/2006 09:35

thanks misdee

SoupDragon · 16/01/2006 09:37

I never CAT and if I want to be contacted, I put my email address in with spaces and "ats" and "dots" etc.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2006 09:39

Why are you cheesed off to find out about it like this? It was as part of a Mumsnet communication. I guess if you've elected not to receive these communications then you wouldn't have received it but that's your choice set up in your member profile.

tissy · 16/01/2006 09:40

quite, Soupy, that's probably quicker than CAT, anyway, so MN may end up losing out financially by dropping the voluntary sub (which in my case was more than £5) and charging for CAT.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2006 09:42

From the letter, I get the impression that they don't "need" the voluntary subs anymore or at least not to the same extent as they did. Maybe the CAT amount will prove to be enough to just top up the coffers.
