There ae two possibilities as far as I can see:

  1. You have a dialer. This is when a programme sneaks onto your computer and calls up your internet via a new, v expensive number. Not sure how to get rid of those. You might not necessarily have 'got' it today.
  2. The call was a scam... did they ask for any account details/information?
hub2dee · 30/11/2005 21:26

giddy, are you on broadband or dial up ?

My guess: you've got a trojan / malware program installed which is dialling a premium rate porn number.

Cure: antivirus and anti spyware updates. Oh, and probably turn off premium rate numbers from your landline.

Sounds like your dial up may have been corrupted? A virus sent to you by email, or visiting a dodgy site which has downloaded a trojan onto your computer, may have managed to overwrite your own dial up software with their own premium rate number. This happened to me once but luckily we spotted it before dialling out. Sorry if I have not explained very well, as I am barely computer literate myself, but if this is what has happened to you, basically you need to re-install your correct dial up program and ditch the dodgy one. Do you have anyone who could help you check this out?

Oops, too slow - the experts have beat me to it

Hey, good point, since when did BT ring you up to warn you that you're spending money with them? Hmm, I would maybe be suspicious about that to begin with.

Hi Lynny, sorry I never remember your name change, and I've seen it / you've told me a couple of times.

I have no doubt that a dubious piece of software has installed a nasty little hidden program that automatically places a call over your dial up modem.

  1. unplug modem cable from wall socket NOW. (well, unless you're using it to surf IYSWIM !

  2. Ask BT to block all premium rate numbers NOW (unless you're really into your horoscopes

  3. Download Spybot Search and Destroy. Run spyware scans (several times), removing all crud.

  4. Download Adaware from Lavasoft. Run spyware scans several times again, removing all crud.

  5. Update your antivirus signatures and scan (several times).

  6. If you've still got problems, the easiest thing will sadly be a reinstall of windows.

I very very very much doubt anything on MN has linked to or installed anything like this.

Often it's from peer-to-peer music sharing, file-sharing, pr0n sites, hacking / 'warez' sites etc.

Watch to see if hubby blushes when he reads this, LOL.

(Sorry Mr. Lynny LOL)

hub2dee · 30/11/2005 21:50

It's not really BT's problem. They have been outstanding to notify you. People can rack up huge bills this way... BT can't take care of millions of people's Windoze PCs IYSWIM...

Hey, and I think BT sux, LOL

hub2dee · 30/11/2005 21:52

I'd like, if I may, to take this opportunity to advise you that Apple Macs are, to all intents and purposes virus and spyware free.

I'll keep saying this, and some Windows users will keep tutting.... but for MANY ordinary users, Windows just gives rise to headaches. Sorry, but it's true.

Lynny: Get dh to buy you a lovely Apple Mac for Xmas. You can reuse your existing screen / keyboard / mouse with a Mac Mini.

hub yes macs are free from this (i've got one), but we had an absoltue horror where somebody plugged into the ntl box down the street, resulting in a £900 phone bill. ntl refused to believe us until we found a neighbour who'd also suffered. the moral is always always get premium rate barred.

hub2dee · 01/12/2005 15:37

LOL giddy1, those fishermen, eh !

One can't be sure, but anything that hints of horn tends to mean dozens of pop-ups and various unpleasant bits of malware, so it is possible those links led to something which downloaded some kind of dialer onto your PC, as a new Dial-Up Network Connection.

You can delete this by selecting it and removing it, and see if this fixes things, otherwise you will have to hit it with anti-spyware programs, and opt to turn on / run a firewall package. (I've left the PC world for the dark side - Apple, LOL - but something called 'blackice' used to be an industry leader in this field).
