Is there any way of making a text speak filter, like the netmums swear one?

So people are just not able to use hideous, stupid, irritating and offensive words such as LOL, PMSL or u

Please?

U r been v silly.

"hideous, stupid, irritating and offensive" is rather subjective, don't you agree?

These guys could probably build you a filter that made any page with a lone "u" redirect to a calming picture of some kittens.

while subjective, some shorthand is sometimes difficult to understand.

I can see that LOL and PMSL might offend the OP, but are quite acceptable in general on MN as they are widely used. Where I can see problems is a post such as this (from a long time ago)...

" n pregnant wiv ... if there are ne sure start centres local ?"

here's someone shortening "and" (n) and "with" (wiv) and "any" (ne) but can spell pregnant and sure start centres (though "locally" was too much to type!)

It's perhaps OK on a text if space is limited but "you" being shortened to "u" when we are typing whole words and generally more complicated ones at that, look like the work of a spotty teenager, and I tend to ignore such comments.

(Have also to admit when my 60-something sister uses such shorthand in a text, it annoys, as it is rarely necessary to shorten in this way!)

Some partially-sighted MN users use screenreaders, which is another good reason to write out the whole word. It's not as if we have a limited character count (or if we do the limit is sufficiently large so as not to be a problem).
