What not to post, and what is allowed regarding current news events

I wanted to ask MNHQ if they could please provide us with some clear, easy to follow guidelines regarding the current murder investigation and what we are allowed to say about it.

I don't want to prejudice a court case with any comment I might make. I have already had a post deleted which I had no idea would be unacceptable, and I would rather not repeat this through ignorance.

I know nothing about libel law, contempt law etc and as part of the media we ought to make very sure we do not cause any disruption to the bringing of justice.

So, perhaps someone from HQ would be kind enough to talk us through it in a way that we can refer to should we notice others getting carried away.

Many thanks - and if this could be a sticky for a little while that would also be great.

Thanks for the suggestion Flightattendant. A number of posts referring to the case have been reported to us over the past few days and we appreciate it's a tricky call. It's inevitable people are going to want to discuss the case but at the same time speculation doesn't help anyone, causes upset and can also be libellous so we do have to be careful about what is allowed on the boards. Once we've had chance to discuss this after the bank holiday we will post up some guidelines but for the time being we will be deleting anything we feel may be libellous.
