to think it's no wonder that a huge proportion of threads in _Chat & AIBU are off topic when there are about 175 topics to choose from?

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 17/11/2010 20:50

'cause it's a bloody nightmare to find the topic that's actually appropriate for the post? Much easier just to chuck it in Chat or vaguely AIBU it.

'tis virtually impossible to find stuff. yy there's advanced search but that doesn't always work help.

Also, AIBU to think that while a cull of topics probably isn't possible or practical a bit of a reshuffle would probably really help?

Oh, and that's +/- 175 'proper' MN talk topics. MN Local and the For Sale / Wanted ones were granted temporary independent republic status for counting.

chat gets deleted after some time which is probably appealing and aibu is the most popular topic isn't it (depressingly)

there are far too many topics though

BitOfFun · 18/11/2010 08:23

There are a gazillon too many topics. I propose:

Stuff about babies

Stuff about older kids

Stuff about teenagers

Proper conversation: mellow pass the time of day

Proper conversation: potential ruck

That covers everything, I think.

30andMerkin · 18/11/2010 08:29

Another fan for lots of topics here, as it means I can hide the stuff I really don't get, don't have to wade through things that really don't interest me to get to my favourites (no offence chicken keepers, but you're not going to help me when my puppy is eating the furniture) and it appeals to my anally retentive list-making side Wink

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 18/11/2010 10:05

Yeah, loads of topics is a Good Thing. But, just as a random example, having a Products topic in the Other Stuff section and then a Products section divided into topics for 1001 different types of products is just lazy site management crazy. Why not move the old (original) Products topic from Other Stuff to the Products section and make it invisible so it can still be searched but not posted on?

OP posts:
RachelMumsnet · 18/11/2010 11:35

Thanks for your suggestions on this thread (although Shock at the accusation of lazy management Fermina!) Have passed these on to the team and we'll come back to let you know what we decide to do/not do.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 18/11/2010 12:00

Thanks Rachel! Here's some gin tea for all concerned.

Was referring to the anomalous situation with the products topics rather than generalising about the management of the site in general. Obviously...

RachelMumsnet · 18/11/2010 14:58

Don't quake in your boots Fermina, you're right; this has apparently been on our to-do list for a long time. It's just v v time consuming so we've all avoided doing it (though I hasten to add that's cos we're over-worked rather than lazy Wink) However, thanks to your reminder, we have now conducted a plan and the original 'products' in 'other stuff' should be gone in the next few months with all it's contents moved across to the other products boards.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 18/11/2010 16:33

That's great Rachel, fantastic in fact. But I just used the Products thing as a random example.

Chuffed with the new Royals topic is too, now I just need to hide it!

So, back to the matter in hand. I'm pretty sure that loads of people post off topic in Chat and AIBU because it's a PITA / time consuming to find the right topic. yy they are the busyest but that's a bit of a self fulfilling prohey IMHO. What's the point in hand sorting all the old products treads from Other Stuff when a massive quantity of (more?) valuable threads on all sorts subjects are constantly not being stored in the archive because they are in Chat? When I was a newbie (not that long ago) most off topic chat threads went along the lines of 'Am posting this in Chat so it'll disappear...'. Haven't seen that disclaimer in a long time.

What are the chances of a bit of a topic reshuffle going on the to do list of doom? I can see that would be a massive job to recategorise everyting, but Rusty's suggestion is probably a lot easier to implement and would really help too:

Quoting Rusty so you don't have to search for her post:

I'm probably going to sound depressingly like the librarian I used to be here, but think it would help a lot if the alphabetical list of topics were to be (a) reorganized a bit and (b) made the default format, or at least fixed so that you could customise it to always show the a-z list.

At the moment for example, if you are looking for, say, discussions on clothes and shoes, if you change the list to a-z and look down the list you find 'Clothes and Shoes' then 'Clothes and Shoes - children's' and 'Clothes and shoes- adults'

You want to talk about adult clothes, so you click on that but find it's actually for selling. So you go back to the topics list, only to discover it's reverted to the category list. So you go back to the top, click on a-z again and try 'Clothes and Shoes' and that's OK - except that a newbie may be completely unaware that the real stuff is actually going on under 'Style and Beauty'

All the For Sale topics are just listed in the main a-z index under their sub-headings, with no indication they are For Sale topics at all - would it be possible to have one For Sale entry in the main index, which you click on to get a sub index of all the various items.
Another topic that would benefit from this is Mumsnet Local - as it's a real pain to have to scroll down past all those to get to the second half of the alphabet. I think For Sale and Mumsnet Local are places that you only go to if you actually want to go there iyswim, so a second click to get there shouldn't be too much of a pain.

I like BoF's suggestion. But you could also theme them.

Question

Moan

Muse

Rant

Advice

For laffs

And, er...

Friday Night Topic

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 18/11/2010 16:55

I like BOFs suggestion too but it really doesn't cover everything and TBH I think there would be loads of moaning helpful input from MNers about what gets put where.

I still think a reorganisation of the sections, a massive cull / amalgamation of topics and a few new topics would make MN much more usable for newbies but I'm sure the practical implications would be too big for MNHQ to want to attempt. Would love to be proved wrong though.

Rusty's suggestion would really help and shouldn't cause any ruckus at all

for some reason(no idea why) I am rather annoyed about the new Royal topic.
seems a bit much, the wedding was announced this week and now hidden away, yet during the election and budget nothing done about the hoards of benefit bashing threads.
(phew I needed to rant about that)

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 18/11/2010 17:02

Yeah, I quite agree 2shoes. the new topic policy has always seemed to be without rhyme and reason. Music? Friday NIght? No chance. Fish? Royals? sure! Biscuit

Slubberdegullion · 18/11/2010 17:48

Fermina, I post almost everything not dog or tent related in chat for the very reason that it will disappear.

I have a little oo-ey everytime I think about the amount of personal stuff I have posted in archived topics that is now stored forever. Nothing major but a drip drip drip of stuff about me and my family that is locked away and that I can't (easily) delete.

Since the DM thing I just wont post anything personal that won't be deleted in chat.

If mn start moving threads from chat into other archived topics then that really is the day I will be hanging up my mn boots.

2shoes · 18/11/2010 18:40

tbh no one keeps to topics and sometimes it is useful not to.
I sometimes (not so much now s it is used against you later) post on the main board about sn, as i want more than the sn POV.
so I assume other people do that as well

your right
I check sn, the go to active convos, I have masses of topics hidden as some I find offensive, some tedious, (products for example) and some are of no interest to me now(as I have teens I can't really help some one having their 1st baby.
I am sure most people do that.(obviously not the same topics as me)

Dumbledoresgirl · 18/11/2010 18:58

If it were down to me, I would have

Health

Kids' stuff (possibly with subsections: babies, school age, teenage)

Adults' stuff (anything from bun sex to relationships)

Entertainment (could be anything from sleb gossip to general chat)

and AIBU would carry an automatic ban for anyone who used it.

Grin
Dumbledoresgirl · 18/11/2010 18:59

Ummmm Bun sex anyone? Grin

Obviously, I meant bum.
