MN now in cohorts with nestle? Body Shop ad on site

Please tell me my eyes deceived me?!!!

Was that actually a Body Shop advert I saw on the side of my MN page? You have a Nestle-free zone logo on your homepage. Yet Body Shop is owned by Nestle (via L'oreal).

Please, please don't continue with this.

Well said Pfft!

Ineedsomesleep · 02/09/2010 19:52

Thank you Justine.

Oartistic · 02/09/2010 20:45

Disagree, Pfft. I think you can wholly support the campaign whilst being realistic about the limits to which you can take things. If MNHQ were to try to be Utterly Worthy, they'd cease to exist. Why not ban posters who eat Kit Kats?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 02/09/2010 21:00

Well that's just ridiculous. In saying that they adhere to the campaign they are attempting worthiness (to use your words Grin). If they aren't bothered about being worthy, they why stick a label up saying that they believe things, that they adhere to things that they actually do not?

It's a bit like being a vegetarian and eating fish. There isn't much point to a nestle boycott if you don't boycott everything.

Oartistic · 02/09/2010 21:29

So, Pfft, why not extend the boycott to any posters who aren't completely anti-Nestle? That of course would be taking it to ludicrous extremes. But so, I think, is refusing to countenance doing advertising deals with companies that Nestle in turn has dealings with. I think it's another case of agreeing to disagree. Smile

JustineMumsnet · 02/09/2010 23:31

I think there is a point Pfft, namely that we are highlighting the issue - the fact that we don't take Nestle-branded advertising is something. It isn't everything, but it's something. And there have been masses of "What's so bad about Nestle/ why do MN ban Nestle conversations?" on the boards over the years, so it's clearly a way of raising awareness. Anyway we can see both sides of the argument and the last thing we want to do is to claim to be something we're not, or to act under false pretenses, so as said, we'll contact BMA and get their take on it and specifically on the use of their logo.

AlCrowley · 03/09/2010 08:01

I agree with Justine :) in that I have seen lots of "what's this Nestle Boycott logo all about then" threads which have brought it to the attention of lots more people and hopefully garnered a lot more followers.

I do think though that the limits of MN's adherence to the boycott should be more clear. Just a bit of text near the logo which explains how far MN are prepared to go with turning down of Nestle-linked advertising etc so that no-one feels cheated when things like the Body Shop ad turn up.

Loosing the Nestle-free logo on MN would undoubtedly mean less people seeing it and finding out about it so I personally would like to see the logo stay but with a bit more transparency about what it means for MN so everyone knows where they stand.

Me too SueW.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/09/2010 17:32

Yes, I agree that there has been a lot of "Nestle wot?" talk over the years on MN and it is great to raise awareness.

But I also think that an attempt to claim that halfheartedly adhering to a campaign because it's rather inconvenient to do it properly is in fact good because you are "raising awareness" is disingenuous.

As I have said - don't commit fully if it is too difficult to avoid all the people on the list. But don't make it look like you are adhering by holding aloft the BMA logo for all to see. I agree with SueW.

JustineMumsnet · 07/09/2010 23:22

Yes you're probably right Pfft. Anyway we are seeing BMA in early Oct and have taken the logo down. We'll keep you posted.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/09/2010 18:29

Surely this is a bit like wearing a badge saying "I support Libdems" but really you are voting for the Tories.

Oh hang on........Wink

I never see any adverts cos I used Mozzilla Firefox - it's great!

Means you can also download Property Bee and watch house prices being reduced in front of your eyes :)

BessieBoots · 04/10/2010 03:50

I have started boycotting Nestle since reading about it on mumsnet. I find it easy.

YunoYurbubson · 04/10/2010 04:31

Slogan:

"Nestle - just TRY boycotting us mwahahahaha"

Hi Sue,
I am not sure, but will find out and report back tomorrow when I am back in the office.

fanjolina · 07/01/2011 22:53

Have you got an update on the meeting? I see that the anti-Nestle logo is back on the site.

Afraid I can't give you the answer to this one, fanjolina - but we'll come back to you next week, if you can bear with us till then.
