Ds1's feet are 11 inches long 28cm.
This is from his heal to toe.
What size does this make him?

Thank you

use the startrite calculator, you need a width measurement too though.

mamaloco · 08/07/2010 13:14

Woah That's big, I would say 43 (eur) 10 men sizes,

probably 44 then 10/11 ?

Thanks for all the help,
he has size ten at the moment but his feet are right at the end and he has blisters on the ends of his toes so I'm sure they are too small,
took him to clarks and he stood on the machine which took forever to work then said size 9 [hmmm]
I'm a nine and they alot bigger than mine.

He's only 12, I hope they slow down soon.

the clarks machines don't work that well on big sizes like that
i would go in again and ask for him to be measured on a manual one

thisisyesterday · 08/07/2010 19:40

oh and womens sizes are different to mens anyway, so just because he is bigger than you doesn't mean he can't be the same size iyswim?!?

LargeGlassofRed · 08/07/2010 19:43

thanks, the machine did look it was struggling,

lucyKate I couldn't get the startright thing to work

Clarks can't measure for toffee anyway!

Apparently both of my DC have had shrinking feet for over a year - despite the fact they are both a foot taller

mamaloco · 09/07/2010 08:17

My DH shoes are 10, and they mesure 28/29 cm, so I would guess your son needs one size up (11) not to touch the end. men and children sizes are different than women.
If you can take the inner sole out of the shoes, you can have your DS step on then and you will see if it fits or not.
(shop owner might not be happy, though, but some brand are design that way, with removable inner sole) You get a better idea of the width and length.

I was in town today and had to get the girls feet measured,
I asked them if they could measure ds1's with a manual measure and sure enough it came up as 10 and half
I said I'd been the other day and they had told me 9, the girl said
'oh yes the machine isn't very good at measuring big sizes'
'
Why measure older children's feet with it then

Style of shoe makes a difference - if he had high arches or a long big toe for eg.
Is he tall for his age? How all is he?!

LargeGlassofRed · 10/07/2010 19:54

He didn't actually try on any shoes,
gone are the days I could pick anything of the shelf in clarks.
He is 12 and 5ft 10 so yes tall for his age, I'm 6ft and my brother 7ft so he's bound to be tall, I dread buying suitable school shoes as his feet are really skinny (d)

It will probably take me most of the school hols to find a suitable pair.

At least dt1 isn't in shoes yet although he took 3 steps today so won't be long

My SIL was 10 when I met dh and at that time her feet were a size 9/10. Her adult size is 12/13.

LargeGlassofRed · 10/07/2010 20:10

god must be a nightmare,
I'm a nine half and that's bad enough!
Both the girls are tall too so shoe shopping going to be a constant challenge

Shoe size is so much more complicated than just the length of the foot.
The ball to heel measurement, the instep, the shape of the foot, how high the arch is whether toes are squared or tapered etc... all of it and more has a bearing upon the size.
You will also find that different manufacturers will have their own sizings because the lasts they use to manufacture shoes will vary.

The way a shoe fastens also makes a difference - lace ups and slip ons will fit differently to velcro or bungee lace shoes.
It is more complicated than it first appears.

You need to get him properly measured by a trained shoefitter because his feet are not yet properly formed at 12 and no I do not mean by Clarks. The ridiculous machines they have never seem to get anyone's size right - the tiniest movement during the process will throw the whole measurement out.

Have a look at The Society of Shoe Fitters website ((www.shoefitters.org)) and find someone in your local area to go to. They will not charge for measuring and they will not insist you buy from them but they will have spent at least 1 year studying shoe fitting, the manufacture of shoes and the development of the foot (unlike most Clarks staff) and they are more likely to have more specialist equipment.

Your son probably needs measuring on a Brannock device as his feet are obviously on the larger end of the scale. Most Clarks shops don't have them but lots of independents do.

Sorry my post is a bit long - hope you get sorted out soon.
