Skippy Peanut Butter

Skippy (blue lid) disappeared from the shelves of all our local shops about a month ago. Then, hoorah, it reappeard just over a week ago BUT has mysteriously disappeared again. Does anyone have any idea what is going on in Skippy world? Its one of the few things my son with autism will eat consistently. I've managed with Crystal but it doesn't seem as nice and has some extra (strange?) ingredients. Thanks.

funny you should ask today i was in costco cash and carry and marvelled at the size of a jar of peanut butter-- it was called skippy!!

janh · 19/07/2003 09:22

Davros, never had Skippy so I don't know what it tastes like but Lidl and Kwiksave/Somerfield have quite big jars and my kids like it. Quite cheap too. I think its ingredients are just peanuts/sugar/oil.

pie · 19/07/2003 09:34

Skippy has disappeared from my shop too!!!!!!

janh · 19/07/2003 13:42

Have checked ingredients on Lidl's ("Route 66" - peanuts, cane sugar, palm oil, sea salt - sounds OK! 454g jar about 70p I think.

SueW · 19/07/2003 14:32

Crikey, I thought ideally peanut butter was just ground peanuts, maybe salted. I didn't know it had all those things added!

janh · 19/07/2003 15:09

I think it's too nutty for most kids without being sweetened - just checked Whole Earth, their "Original" is 96% nuts (product information says "contains nuts" - just in case you were in any doubt!) palm oil and sea salt and "American Style Sweetened" has 93% nuts, and applejuice rather than sugar. Not sure how that will taste....

pie · 19/07/2003 15:16

But Skippy is unique, there really is no peanut butter that tastes quite like it, even though the ingredients listed are the same as any other.

DH says Peter Pan is even better though.

zebra · 19/07/2003 15:47

I'm with you, SueW. I can't stand those brands of peanut butter that are 30% sugar... blech...! Give me the unsweetened stuff, any day.

wickedstepmother · 19/07/2003 15:51

Yeah, we used to buy Skippy by the bus load from Costco when we lived in Manchester from their Trafford Park outlet.

janh · 19/07/2003 18:20

Not having access to Skippy I can't comment but Route 66 is fine by us.

SofiaAmes · 19/07/2003 22:42

Skippy extra chunky is the only thing that anyone should be allowed to call peanut butter.
And as an avid label reader, I realize it has sugar etc. added, but that's why it tastes so good.

Davros, are you near a Costco. It's worth joining just for the extra large Skippy's. If you keep it in the fridge, it will last forever.

Davros · 20/07/2003 15:51

I'm not too far from a CostCo but, bu##er my old wellies, its reappeared in local Budgens today! Maybe local Yanks are getting to it first? Just hope supplies stay stable now but will consider CostCo for future if not.

As a North American living in the UK, I endevour to find good quality peanut butter as us lot are practically brought up on the stuff. In my opinion, Skippy is certainly the best one available in the UK. Sainsbury's always seems to have it. If you're a peanut butter fan and you are visiting the US at any point, try JIF (yes, pronounced the same as the kitchen cleaner!). It's about the best there is.

SoupDragon · 20/08/2003 13:00

My, how I hate peanut butter...

Paula71 · 20/08/2003 23:32

My ds twins aged 19 months love peanut butter. As we can't get Skippy unless we go near a costco (i.e. hardly ever) I use ASDA own brand which is quite nice. Tesco one is rubbish though. I'll certainly try Sainsburys if they do Skippy as it is lovely and creamy. I'll then fight my sons for a taste, mmmmmm

willow2 · 20/08/2003 23:37

Would just like to say that I had been having a very good low cal day until this eye caught my thread.

Can anyone smell toast?

willow2 · 20/08/2003 23:37

Thread caught my eye even.

Sorry, was talking with my mouth full.

Davros · 21/08/2003 23:13

Very good combo is Skippy PNB with a piece of English Cheddar. Honest! Found out by mistake using the same knife for my son's food.

pb with a smidgeon of marmalade on top... sweet and tangy!!! hmmmm!

DaddyCool · 26/08/2003 08:54

Yes bea, skippy do a crunchy version and a honey roasted nut version. Both are quite nice...

Davros · 29/09/2003 19:08

CountessDracula · 29/09/2003 19:14

I'm sure Waitrose do it. Could be hallucinating though

janh · 29/09/2003 19:17

Never had it.

sunchowder · 30/09/2003 18:44

Davros, if you get desparate we had tons of it here in the states--contact me via the website here if you really have no luck and I will mail you some, OK?

cocoliver · 30/09/2003 18:47
