Hoping there is someone with more knowledge than me (feel pretty sure this is the case )

There's a scheme through my work where I can get a computer at a reduced rate. There are three I am trying to decide between, all laptops, all about the same price but they have subtle differences.

My wants_

Wireless capability
Not wanting to play games that take up lots of memory

Hmm, that's about it really.

The figures I'm trying to decide between are:

Option1

Intel Celeron M processor 350-1.3GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 400 FSB

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

256MB DDR RAM 333MHz

40GB 5400rpm hard drive

DVD/CD-RW/ Dual Layer DVD-RW drive

14'' WXGA wide screen display (1280x768)

Intel integrated graphics

4 cell Li-Ion battery (life up to 2.5 hrs approx.)

10/100 LAN

v90 56k modem

Built-in audio and speakers

Ports - 3xUSB 2, Firewire, VGA, PCMCIA, DVI, IrDA,

Weight - 2.2kg

Dimensions - 332mmx230mmx25/32mm

Option2

Intel Pentium M 735 processor

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

512Mb DDR RAM, 333MHz

60GB 5400rpm hard drive

DVD/CD-RW/ Dual Layer DVD-RW drive

15.4" WXGA wide screen display (1280x800)

128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics

6 cell Li-Ion battery (life up to 3 hrs approx.)

Built-in SD card reader

10/100 LAN

v90 56k modem

Built-in audio and 2.1 speakers

Ports - 3xUSB 2, Firewire, VGA, PCMCIA

Weight - 2.9kg

Dimensions - 354mmx250mmx32mm

Option3

Intel Pentium M 740 processor

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

512MB DDR II RAM, 533MHz

SATA 80GB 5400rpm hard drive

DVD/CD-RW/ Dual Layer DVD-RW drive

15.4'' WXGA wide screen display (1280x800)

128MB nVidia GeForce Go 6600 PCI Express graphics

8 cell Li-Ion battery (life up to 4 hrs approx.)

Built in card reader, supports MMC/SD/MS-Pro

10/100/1000 LAN

v90 56k modem

Built-in audio and speakers

Audio DJ - Music control buttons

Ports - 5xUSB 2, Firewire, VGA, PCMCIA, Express Card, TV Out

Weight - 2.9kg

Dimensions - 357mmx276mmx35mm

Wireless Mini PCI 802.11abg (54Mbps) LAN

Price is Option 1 cheapest, then Option 2 then Option 3, although there isn't that much in it (about £200 between Options 1 and 3 although I would be paying monthly over 3 years so difference per month obviously less).

Any thoughts please?

I use a Dell inspiron 6000, does me fine has intel centrino and wireless, 4 usb ports sd card reader, 15.2" widescreen. does me fine. have a look at their website. let me know if you want the full spec i have on here currently

hunkermunker · 10/08/2005 13:15

Would def go for a Pentium over a Celeron.

ionaming · 10/08/2005 19:28

I would second Hunkermunker & wouldn't personally touch a celeron processer. I would go with option 3 - best spec, slightly faster & hard drive is quite a bit bigger. With laptops/PC's I would always go with the best spec you can afford.

Thank you more knowledgeable people than me . Was thinking that probably Option 3 would be best, although had no idea about celeron/Pentium.

The good thing is that as I am on maternity leave I don't have to start paying anything until I go back to work again.
