Baby stuff second hand?

giantpurplepeopleeater · 03/06/2010 18:16

Anyone know of anywhere good - website or shop - wher I can shop for some second hand baby stuff??

I don't have a great deal of money and am keen not to waste it on new stuff that won't be worn/ used for very long. I am keeping an eye on ebay but seem to be losing out on a lot of auctions!

Also - can anyone advise of things that should definately not (prob for health reasons) be bought second hand and that I should look to buy new??

Thanks

NCT sale for clothes, toys, cot, play mat, sling. Check their web site for details.

Just don't buy the car seat second hand.

TBH if you have time to browse charity shops you will probably get some decent clothes. At our last NCT sale there was a huge box of sleepy suits in small sizes, I think lots of people get them as presents but don't get round to using them.

And freecycle / freegle / cheapcycle on line might have a few useful items.

My tip for ebay would be to put items on watch, then put in your maximum you would like to pay right near the end. Somehow if an item has early bids on it seems to be more interesting to others! Also look out for stuff that ends in the daytime during the week.

carboot sales are great at this time of year.

I bought 90% of my DS1's stuff there, most was from next, lots had tags,
theres been LOTS of great prams too,I got a gorgeous silver cross linear freeway for £30 last week,

freecycle is also great,I gave away all my DS1's stuff on there (as i was too bloomin lazy to carboot it) i regret it now as we decided to have a 3rd baby, who was a boy lol!

Charity shops for clothes. And Netmums nearly new board. I never buy DS anything new!

IMoveTheStars · 10/06/2010 19:34

freecycle can be good, you have to be quick though.

Only things you need to buy new are the carseat and the cot mattress.

search on ebay for newborn bundles of sleepsuits etc.

Do you know anybody who's got a slightly older baby? People are often very happy to pass things along the line

DinahRod · 10/06/2010 19:40

-Carboots are probably the best value for money
-Ebay midweek/items that finish early in the day or items that don't necessarily photograph very well but sellers have good feedback. Decide early on the limit including p&p, don't be tempted to go over.
-MN sale boards, Netmums, Freecycle
-Charity shops
-NCT nearly new sales

When are you due and do you know what you are having?

Think there is too much scare over used car seats. My MIL has a used carseat and there is nothing wrong with it. Majority of people would not put a damaged seat for sale anyway so you could pay £20ish at car boot.

Def new mattress - they get yukky.

Everything else 2nd hand on my 2nd baby I hardly spent at all.

A must is a simple baby bouncer (see if the cover is washable) dont worry about these all singing and dancing rain forest rubbish. Baby bath support - brilliant.

Most items are fab as they havent been worn for long. If there is bobbling then so what all items lose some condition after washing anyway. Make sure as much as poss is washable and easy to disassemble. Instructions always helpful. Books (gina Ford for me)

Dont forget friends and family give loads on the arrival of baby so dont go overboard.
One tip is your not going to know the weight of your newborn so wasting too much on clothing.

I agree with car boot sales. I love them. I buy most of my sons clothes from car boot sales and he wears Next, Gap, John Rocha, etc.... all hardly worn as the little blighters grow so quickly.

Also car boot sales are obviously alot cheaper than ebay.

Some good prams at the booty too. Some weeks I go and don't get much and other weeks I get far too much but its too good to leave there!!!

XboxWidow30 · 16/06/2010 09:42

O0h, and agree with bacon on the weight thing.

All my babies have been around 7 lb ish when born so I stocked up on newborn size and also had a very few bits of early baby stuff as found that this sometimes fitted better. Then 4th baby arrived and was 9lb 3 oz. We may have got about 2 weeks use out of the newborn stuff and I didn't use half of what I had.

!!!!

giantpurplepeopleeater · 19/06/2010 14:50

Oooh thanks guys.

XboxWidow - I think that is what I am worried about, spending lots on things that never see the light of day! Have decided not to buy many newborn clothes as I think thats what the gradparents will get. Am going to get a couple of babygrows and then some of the early baby stuff.

DinahRod - I am now 18 weeks - due in November so no idea yet what I'm having. Plus I am thinking about all of this REALLY early. I'm pulling together a list of things I think I need to make sure I don't get pulled into thinking its all necessary! I have bought the Mumsnet book on pregnancy and it's got a good list of essentials in there!

Bacon - I did actually buy a second hand travel system which includes car seat and buggy and I was a bit worried about this. I have had a good look over it and it doesn't seem to have any damage - not even scratches. Is there any way I can be sure?

Also - a baby bouncer - is that the little chairs they can sit in and kind of bounce in?

Hi, my friend told me i could sell and buy used baby things on mumsnet. My son has already outgrown his pram after 5 months and i have a few other things like new clothes etc which I would like to sell. Is there a way to do it on Mumsnet or can anyone help? I am based in Paddington, London.

Thanks

Ralu
