it's 115cms high - is it too high/dangerous.

DS is fine walking up and down ladders but confusing (normally rather lax) DP says it's too dangerous whereas I think it's fine??

3 yr old dd2 gets up in the night sometimes for a wee - I would be worried she might be half-asleep and fall down the steps of it when she'd just woken up

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2010 21:30

hmm i can't decide!
ds1 has a similar height bed, but with a slanting ladder and he was in it from around 2 and a half, 3 ish

like notnowbernard I would worry a bit about managing it in the middle of the night..

mollymax · 26/05/2010 21:31

Can that bed be turned up the other way? I know some ikea beds can. It might solve the problem in the short term. My dd3 who has just turned 3 climbs up onto her sisters cabin beds, then yells to be lifted down

LauraNorder · 26/05/2010 21:32

Don't think I would. Would worry about falling out/getting out of bed in the middle of the night. Sorry!

JetSetWilly · 26/05/2010 21:34

yes i agree the climbing down during the night/first thing in the morning is a bit of a worry isn't it...

yes Molly the bed can be turned upside down (so with the bed on the bottom) and turned the other way at a later date and I think that may be the answer for now

it's just we were hoping to tell DS that (the high bed) is how firemen sleep at night in an attempt to get him to sleep in big bed on his own....

ok ok it's looking like a no - can't believe (normally lax DP) was right here in terms of perceived danger!

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 26/05/2010 21:36

Yes I would. Both DSs went into beds like that at around 2.5. Only DS2 fell out and that was just the once.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2010 21:36

and he was absolutely fine!

JetSetWilly · 26/05/2010 21:36

and as well I should say he will have only just turned 3 - more in favour of a no

OP posts:
JetSetWilly · 26/05/2010 21:37

oh hold on - soup dragon is here to back me up!

what happened when your DS2 fell out? just a little shock hopefully???

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 26/05/2010 21:42

A bump, a shout and, er, that was it. It was 7 years ago (and he's not fallen out since!) I think he tried to climb over the side rather than down the ladder

To start off, they used a futon matress which was thinner than a bed mattress, this meant there rails were a little higher.

JetSetWilly · 26/05/2010 21:45

yes the ikea mattress is very thin so the rails would stop him rolling out

bless him, i don't imagine he tried climbing over teh side again...!

I think we have this bed and ours does flip over and can therefore be a low bed until you want to have a bunkbed. Also our DS has actually fallen out of it when it has been low!! I think he might just be v clumsy.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2010 21:48

No, over the years they progressed to jumping from DS1's instead

heymango · 26/05/2010 21:49

DS1 went into a bed like this at 3.2 - we have had no problems or bumps in the night! The steps are a little safer on ours though - wider and filled in at the back. Don't think that would make much difference though.

Trafficcone · 26/05/2010 21:52

As others have said, it'd all boil down to how awake they tended to be when they went for a wee at night and how often they were up each night for wees

JetSetWilly · 26/05/2010 21:53

lol at rocket and soupy

yes i know what you mean about the ladder mango - they don't seem that safe and I think slanted and/or larger steps may be easier for a little one

(this of course doesn't apply if they are climbing over the side or jumping beds!)

TheHouseofMirth · 26/05/2010 21:57

DS went into a midsleeper at that age and has been fine. Ours is this one and has a slanty ladder and handrails.

JetSetWilly · 26/05/2010 22:03

that's a nice one - double the price though! slanted ladders do look safer

I should consider the slide bed DS would definately sleep in it then!

OP posts:
TheHouseofMirth · 26/05/2010 22:23

It is expensive but we looked at the Ikea one and it seemed pretty flimsy. Also ours can convert into bunk beds or an evn higher bed that you can put a sofa or wardrobe or desk under in the future.

JetSetWilly · 26/05/2010 22:31

yes i've got to say i do agree with flimsy looking ((haven't seen it in store yet)

and obviously will last longer if you can put sofa etc underneath it later - good point

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 27/05/2010 10:23

we have the thuka one too!

it is expensive, but it's also so versatile
we have it as a short midsleeper atm, eventually it will be turned into bunkbeds for them, and after that it can be turned into 2 full-size singles

so def worth the money for us

MrsJohnDeere · 27/05/2010 12:10

No. The height wouldn't bother me but it looks incredibly flimsy. Would fall apart the moment any small boys started bouncing on it, imho.

JetSetWilly · 27/05/2010 12:12

you honestly do have a very good point there MrsJohnDeere! I do agree! We may have a look at it tonight
