I love Red, but I find I skip all the beauty and hair bits as I think who can afford this stuff or has time to faff with it all? Yet BC I loved these sections...

Which mags do you like and why?

Very rarely buy anything.

If I do then it tends to be New Scientist - it takes me ages to work my way through it so it seems good value for money.

Never really cared who's wearing what, is sleeping with who, or how to get 50 orgasms in 5 easy steps.

Used to like Fortean Times but I dunno if they stopped that... lots of weird and wonderful stories of aliens and sprouts being grown in the shape of elvis!

Tinker · 26/07/2005 12:44

None, think they're all poo (women's ones, I mean)

expatinscotland · 26/07/2005 12:45

I never got anything, ggg .

It is kaperkaillie AT gmail DOT com.

triceratops · 26/07/2005 12:47

I used to like Marie Claire but it is just the same as all the others now.

I tend to choose Glamour because it is half the price but has exactly the same articles as the other glossies.

I always feel ripped off when I have read the magazine though as they seem to consist entirely of adverts.

I also get really riled by the psuedo science that a lot of them peddle usually concerning diets or face cream. I wish that the mags had a hint of politics/ethics/health or any serious issue. I hate the way they think all women care about is lippy, shoes and celebrity cellulite.

pabla · 26/07/2005 12:48

Get Living Etc every month (still renovating our house) and occassionally get Easy Living. However, I find the fashion section no better than other women's mags - in the first issue, most of the tops made the models look pregnant (I know smocks are in fashion but why? They remind me of the pregnancy attire worn by mum in the 70s.)

binkie · 26/07/2005 12:55

What would be your ideal mag? My ideal would:

  • do campaigning stuff on principles of (i) women's-solidarity and (ii) think globally act locally - so that you identify a bit & come away feeling that there is some small something you can do;

  • review fash trends so you can follow on the cheap (again like the MC "100 ideas" section);

  • not have a single celebrity interview, or even recognise that fabricated famousness exists; and

  • maybe have a bit of good fiction in it, like the occasional Alan Bennett bits in the London Review of Books.

My only mags are Granta, and LRB as above. Do those count?

Marina · 26/07/2005 13:07

LRB we had to ditch that after our introductory offer ran out.
The only thing I can think of with a world/ethical slant is The New Internationalist...

Magazine addict!

Buy trashy ones like Now, Heat to read in the bath.

Read Prospect and Private eye.

Various craft and sewing magazines

Good Houskeeping - I ask for it to be placed in a brown bag as I like to think I am still quite young and with it - but this monthly purchase betrays my true self

Childcare magazines for work

Junior magazine - I like to look at clothes and try and copy them

INstyle and Vogue - again to look at and try and copy clothes

Sometimes the odd gardening magazine for those projects I never get round to.

TwinSetAndPearls · 26/07/2005 13:08

I used to like Red but got out of the habit of buying it.

bundle · 26/07/2005 13:19

trashy ones (heat etc) lots - I blame this on ease of purchase at Sainsbury's local nr Holborn and it takes just the right amount of time to read it on the way home (and donate to another lucky person on the tube)

occasionally: marie claire, red, junior, private eye.

read the lancet and bmj at work..do they count??

hamster · 26/07/2005 13:27

I love to buy baby mags, they're always finding out new stuff and I like to keep up with what's going on-though there is no comparison of course with experience!

On the odd occassion I buy Marie Claire, Heat and Now...oh and if there's due a good story line in Eastenders usually a soap mag!

Iklboo · 26/07/2005 13:48

Can't stand a lot of women's mags "My son ran away with my neighbour's daughter's dog's hamster" and all that malarkey. Sometimes get 'REAL' magazine. Ususally Empire, Total Film and the baby mags with freebies on.

Lio · 26/07/2005 14:09

None, unless Guardian Weekend counts - am addicted to the Quiz on next-to-last page. Weaned myself off magazines years ago so extra funds for chocolate.

vickiyumyum · 26/07/2005 14:30

i always buy glamour, junior and grazia.
and if i've got a few days off and the kids are still going to be at school/nursery then i buy trashy magazines like now and heat.

Libb · 26/07/2005 14:34

Doesn't anyone read Real magazine? I have a few times and it is geared towards mums with young children and seems to have a bit of everything for everyone - can seriously recommend it

(I also admit to Heat magazine for gossip . . .)

pootlepod · 26/07/2005 14:42

I'll often get Heat and I like Real too as it's a £1. I'll read others if they're passed onto me but I wouldn't buy them.

I enjoy Junior for the articles but makes me feel very poor. And I subscribe to Simply Cards and Papercraft after rave reviews on mumsnet.

BTW, the NCT homepage has a link with deals to cheaper mag subscriptions and I think some money goes to the NCT.

OldieMum · 26/07/2005 18:41

We take the New York Review of Books - lots of interesting articles on literature and the arts, world affairs, US politics etc. I think it's less incestuous than the London Review of Books and it makes it possible to keep up to date on subjects I'd never have time to read around properly.

Stilltrue · 26/07/2005 18:49

Just skimmed thru this, so maybe missed something - but am surprised nobody reads Hello! It's just sooo funny!

I read Heat if at the hairdresser, but am getting bored with women's mags really. will buy Homes & Gardens if doing the place up, sometimes salivate over Delicious or Olive, but that's about it. haven't time anyway!

Aragon · 26/07/2005 18:50

Not much now. Private Eye but just cos DH gets it.
