Before I blow my dryer out does anyone know a place where I can buy a white noise CD in the UK. I have found a stockist in the USA but was hoping to source one in the UK.

Try the radio slightly mistuned

SoupDragon · 27/06/2003 18:33

OK, curiosity has got the better of me: Why??

sis · 27/06/2003 20:30

Ds, I think it may be to help soothe baby - lots of babies love the sound of vacuum cleaners, washing machines etc - so I assume this is similar but , of course, I could be way off track.

sis · 27/06/2003 20:30

sorry, that should read 'SD' and not 'Ds'

I was given a posh cot mobile that plays 2 different tunes, gets quieter the longer its on and has a remote control AND a white noise setting. Can't remember the make, something like Sassy? Must be available in UK as that's where we are.

WedgiesMum · 27/06/2003 22:01

I know you can get them here because we have students who use them in exams at our place because it helps them control their epileptic seizures under stressful conditions - perhaps one of the epilepsy organisations????

kaz33 · 27/06/2003 22:03

Youre right Sis - it totally wipes my DS out.

The american company i found - do 4 different versions of white noise - from a gentle WN to the harsh Vacumn Cleaner !!

try RNID and scroll down to Sound Enrichment Device, but it seems a bit pricey at nearly £27, so would be more inclined to go for prufrock's advice and tune the radio off-station. A cheap office fan would probably do the trick as well.

mengli10 · 27/06/2003 22:58

Or you could just leave your hairdryer on for another hour or so and record the noise on to a cassette or something. Then you can just play it whenever you want.

Just an idea.

I agree with snugs. In this hot weather a fan is a brilliant tool for "sleep motivation" - cools and soothes in one. It even helps me to drop off to sleep easier as I am suffering from sleeplessness too at the mo! It has got to be better than wearing out your hairdryer

There is a great tape/CD called Jaygee Babysooth that I think should be given to all mums! I won a tape in a baby mag and didn't belive it's claims but when DS2 was screaming and nothing seemed to help we put it on and he rolled his head to one side and fell asleep! Fluke I thought but it worked every time! unless he was Ill. available onthis I don't know what I would have done without it!

SamboM · 30/06/2003 09:42

or if you have a spare little telly, just turn it on and unplug the aerial and it will produce white noise

kaz33 · 30/06/2003 21:19

I don't have a tape recorder so would prefer to buy something to soothe DS2. Thanks KMS, I'll give the CD a go.

Hey KMS - the Jaygee is great, I can put him down in his cot when tired - turn the CD player on and off he goes to sleep. No longer pacing up and down infront of the dryer.

The only problem is that DS2 is in our bedroom so the noise is a bit grim. Not sure how DS1 will take it when he shares a room with his big brother

Does anyone know till what age the white noise thing works?
I'm going to try it with ds. He is soothed by the hairdryer on the rare occasions I dry my hair but hadn't thought of trying it at other times.

suedonim · 06/07/2003 06:43

My dd1 went to sleep with the Jaygee tape for company until she was about three!! She loved it. I think you have to start it before about 10wks of age and the noise is perhaps not what you want to listen to, but once they are accustomed to it, you can use it at a normal volume. It doesn't work for all babies, though. I tried it with dd2, and it had no effect at all.

KMS · 25/09/2003 22:41

Kazz33- only just looked back at this thread. great you had success with CD I think they should give it to everyone in the bounty bag!! I used it on DS2 through all his teething so he was well into second year. Now works a dream on DD aswell!

MrR · 25/11/2008 06:47

Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread - but does anyone know how to use the Jaygee Babysooth CD or other white noise? I bought the MP3 but with no instructions - should it be played loud or quietly? At what point do you put it on - before you put baby down or once they are in bed?

Thanks for any help.

ellasmum1 · 25/11/2008 22:24

you just play it from speakers about 12 to 18 inches away from baby, supposed to leave baby in cot alone to settle, play noise quite loud at first and for it to be most effective it should first be used under 10 weeks of age.once baby is used to it you can use it with baby in your arms etc and at a lower volume. It recommends turning bass and treble off if possible.you are supposed to let cd stay on for full length or baby may start crying again.
