Anyone got a WeeRide balance bike?

I need a small balance bike, which is not too expensive, in case DD doesn't like it.

I've seen these and wondered if anyone has got one and what they think of it?

I've been told that the min seat height is 30cm - is that right?

Thanks

Hi
Not sure if I can help as I haven't one of these but am a big fan of balance bikes. Questions I'd ask are: is there a steering limiter (i.e. to stop a little child turning the handlebars too far, too fast). How much does it weigh? You will end up with bike in one hand (or better still attach a strap and stick it over your shoulder) and child in other, so weight is important! What are those tyres made of? They don't look like proper pneumatic tyres. Personally, I wouldn't be keen if that's the case. Brakes : feet are adequate, reliable and safe as a means of stopping for little kids - though they do ruin their shoes! It is likely that a little hand won't be able to reach the brake lever and apply enough force to use the brake adequately, which is probably just as well as a front-brake only is how you go over the handle bars if you're too sharp. I don't subsribe to their comment about most people not wanting wood -(our Like-a-Bike has been indestructable). I can understand that many people find the best wooden brands beyond their budget though. Have you loooked at some alternatives?: here for example I hope your DC enjoys whatever you go for though, mine have both loved theirs and went straight to peddle-bikes with no problems.

ds has a balance bike, raleigh one and he loves it (he is 3). DD (4) got a normal bike with stabalisers one and she prefers ds's !

Lovely bikes and look like a fab idea.

I know someone with one of these, they are pointless and the child gets bored very very quickly...wouldn't you?

Rockbird · 05/04/2010 11:22

I'm eyeballing one of these for DD later this year. On my drive to work I see loads of little ones scooting along with their mothers to drop older siblings off to school. Would love a wooden one but they are pricey alright.

Dd3 (2yr 9mths) got one of these for Christmas

She's only been on it a couple of times (bad weather and lack of opportunity) but is already getting the hang of it. She loves it.
Dd2 has a big bike but very often pinches a go of dd3's bike because "it's more fun"

Would second the advice to look at the weight as you do end up carrying it around. The rothan is very very light though and is no problem to carry.

Ds (2) has the same as Plonker's dd - the Islabike Rothan. They are really great, very strong, and have excellent customer service.

Islabikes also have a buy back scheme where they will part-exchange the bike when you want to buy bigger, and they seem to keep their value really well on Ebay too.

It's a little bit more expensive than the cheapest bikes, but I'm very very impressed with them. Oh, they also have breaks, which some of the other balance bikes don't have.

KAEKAE, I think maybe you are not taking about the same bike as us..? .

Not sure how the kids could get bored of it..? Its a bike...BUT one that makes learning to ride it easier...

nicm · 05/04/2010 22:25

not sure how kids get bored on them either...

my ds has the early rider classic www.bikedock.co.uk/posit/shop/search.php?searchtext=early+rider&manf=&format=1

he is now 23 months and has had it since christmas and he loves it. got the hang of it really quickly and i like the fact that it has restricted steering that can later turn into normal steering.

dearprudence · 05/04/2010 22:39

Or you can get a normal bike and just take the pedals off. Then when you think they're ready, stick the pedals back on and off they go.

Thanks for all the replies.
I remeasured my petite DD and it looks like most of the bikes are all too big for her. In the end I have chosen this as it was the only one which went low enough!
Hopefully it will be ok and she won't bore of it too quickly.
