Hello! Try Wickes - you'll have to go into the store though, and you'll need to buy the joists rather than a kit if you want to do it as cheap as possible.

katymac · 17/07/2005 19:55

Hiya - you think?
That might be too difficult for us - that's why I fancied a kit

i like the way it says 'only £648'????

katymac · 17/07/2005 20:06

Well if you look at the others it's reasonable - but I want cheap!!

Here's a place to start looking , katymac!

Janh · 17/07/2005 20:09

Is this the same one? How does the price compare for the same size?

Janh · 17/07/2005 20:12

Same one from screwfix - slightly cheaper.

Have a look on kelkoo too.

katymac · 17/07/2005 20:20

How do you do it Jan?

I like this one better Nice huh?

That one is very ladylike (I like the side bits) but your one looks more robust and I'm guessing you need robust!

katymac · 17/07/2005 20:24

It's the same manufacturer as the first (so I guess it's just camera angle that makes it look delicate)

I really like the balistrades (is that the right word) saves on stair gates and the like.......

You will need SOME skills....

What kind of base are you putting it on?

katymac · 17/07/2005 20:51

Grass....I think?

If you went to Wicks or any diy place and asked they would help you to buy the piece separarely (ie not part of a kit) it will be much much cheaper. They may even draw you a plan etc?!

morningpaper · 18/07/2005 20:36

KatieMac you can't just put it on grass because the grass will GROW through it and also be impossible to cut around the edges...

And it will be v. uneven.

You will probably need to dig down a few inches to get all the turf off, then lay down some membrane so new grass doesn't grow through, then dump, say, 3 tonnes of gravel on it. (This is what I did to mine.) This is the easiest way of doing it I reckon.

Wickes are good for advice though - I'd recommend them.

katymac · 18/07/2005 20:53

Thanks Mp - I would have worked this out (eventually) good advise

It would be fine on slabs on a deepish bed of gravel, just ensure slabs are level

Milliways · 18/07/2005 21:25

Have you tried The Garden Factory? . It's worth registering for a brochure as we got fantastic wooden furniture for half price in a winter sale.

katymac · 18/07/2005 22:23

Slabs will cost more than gravel......

Thanks everyone lots to think about

OP posts:
Skribble · 18/07/2005 22:28

With slabs you don't have such a deep layer of gravel.

katymac · 19/07/2005 07:32

I could use something like 'Pathclear' to keep the weeds down

morningpaper · 19/07/2005 14:42

You need the gravel (or sand/concrete) to get a level base. Normal ground is very uneven.

I just used gravel - I found that it was impossible to get slabs level, even on the gravel. The gravel sort of beds the decking down so it's supported evenly all the way across.

katymac · 19/07/2005 16:12

yep - going with gravel
