I'm after a book case for my little boys room which his sister will share with him soon- so i'm after a unisex book case that can hold about 50books.. space is restricted so would need one within 30" wide (76cm)..

been looking at the GLTC, but they're quite pricey and after reading reviews, their CS seems to be down the pan!

Should I get one that has books forward facing like this, or a normal one like this- i think the latter will potentially hold more right?

Have considered Ikea's Hensvik one but not sure if I can customise it (paintable?)as they're a bit plain and drab-ish..

Any suggestions/ help would be sooo appreciated. I can't find many kids bookcases within budget (sister is buying as a bday prezzie for my boy- so i don't wanna find one mega expensive- but within about £80 I'd think..that's not too much is it?)... has anybody bought one that's been a no-regrets great buy? which are good? Which one shall I buy?! Anybody wanna get rid of theirs and earn some dosh out of it?!I live just 20mins outside of London, so could drive within reasonable distance.. TIA

2 of these would be good
Have you thought of these instead of traditional bookcase?

Tis 77cms tho?

Tis 80cms tho?

I bought one of these for DS and found it really good. So much so that I bought another one when DD came along. It might be a bit out of your price range though.

We also have a regular bookshelf and I find it a pain in the neck in comparison as DS is forever pulling out a book and causing several other books to fall on the floor.

thanks a bunch mooching and bran - i did come across the tidybooks one and it looks lovely, but it's a tad too much £ at the mo... im still looking and i think my ds would also be pulling out numerous books just to get to the 'right' one if i bought a regular bookcase..

bran does that book shelf really hold 85 books?!

Yes, someone asked me before and I counted them. I think DS had about 93, mostly thin books like The Gruffalo. If you have a lot of thicker hardbacks then obviously you won't get as many on.

detoxdiva · 09/02/2010 09:12

Oh yes - dd has the one that bran mentioned - 'tis great....a little pricey but very good quality, hold loads of books, takes up very little room....and best of all was easy enough for me to assemble on my own

sammysamsam · 09/02/2010 12:24

oooh, i'm edging towards the bran one

scoured fleabay..this looks good- £75..same dimensions as brans one too..hmm..
shall i go for it? unsure!!

We have the kilby in DS1&2s room. Cheap and cheerful

But we have Billy bookcases in the dining room which are FAB. Already customised with extra shelf "things", extensions and looking at doors for when they all get a bot older

bran · 09/02/2010 12:58

You could probably customise a traditional cheaper bookcase (where the books stand spine outwards). If you put a piece of wood about 2 inches high across the width of the shelf, about 3 inches out from the back, then you would be able to stand books cover outwards.

You could make it look really pretty by buying letters or stenciling each child's name on their own shelf. Or you could put a narrower piece of wood across as a rail if you wanted a lighter look.

pollywollydoodle · 09/02/2010 13:13

we have the ikea henksvig one... holds a lot of books but it might be difficult to customise as it has a shiny surface. maybe use the type of paints you can use on melamine?

pantshavenames · 09/02/2010 13:20

Vertbaudet have a reasonable selection:
this one?
or
this?

I want to buy a house now so I can buy some bookcases!

jelliebelly · 09/02/2010 13:30

I would definitely recommend the tidy books case that bran mentioned - it has been fab - takes up hardly any room and holds loads of toddler books - we've just moved the one we bought for ds into dd's room - despite being well used it hardly has a mark on it - well worth the money. just had a quick look on amazon and one of their sellers has them at 20% off at the mo 2059&sr=8-1 here

How about these from Next?

We have 2 of those large gallery bookcases from GLTC, one in each of DS's bedrooms.

Have had the first one for 4 years now - lasting well, no scratches, easy to put up (I did it myself!) and the service was fine. Bargain at £61, minus your 10% discount from MN. Kids love them as can see the books easily
