Safety Issue: Roller Blind Sun Shade

If you have a Roller Blind Sun Shade, please check that the bottom bar isn't broken.

Recently, I found my six month old baby boy holding half of the metal strip from the bottom of the blind facing up towards his chin. The metal bar which keeps the bottom straight and weights it down has a potential weak point in the centre where it's riveted into the blind. Ours somehow got broken.
Had I swerved, braked quickly, if he'd moved suddenly, or even simply decided to put it into his mouth, the strip could've seriously hurt him.

I took it back to the shop, and their response was to offer me an exchange for a new one! I asked for it to be sent to their Quality team and their [eventual] response was that as this had been an isolated incidence, they would not be taking any further action other than to suggest to the manufacturer that they investigate using plastic instead of metal.

I was very disappointed that the shop and manufacturer didn't feel that my baby being at risk of at the very least being hurt warranted further action as it was an isolated accident, but I really hope that they are right.

This is why I want to get this message around to as many parents and carers as possible. Please help me to ensure that that it IS an isolated incidence by regularly checking your roller blinds for breaks in the metal, or consider switching to the Pop-up version.

You might want to contact "You and Yours" on BBC Radio 4, the lunch-time consumer programme, or perhaps "Woman's Hour" (since Jane Garvey is a mum), saying how disappointed you were by the responses.

Seeing you mention "swerve" I assume this is for use in a car. Could be worth "naming and shaming" (give the manufacturer's name, or link to an example photo)

I'm guessing it's from Clippasafe, but could be wrong, and I didn't spot any "pop up" version from them, so maybe you could be specific about who makes that one, too.

(Only thinking ahead about if you were asked in an interview, for example... and when you e-mail you can always put the product specifics in brackets, to forewarn the presenter that it's a brand name coming up.)

we had a similar thing with a blind from toys r us (own range). Tbh I never questioned it although looking back maybe I should have.

These days I find myself questioning things less as nothing seems to last long.
