Stairgate fixed to...second stair? is it a problem?

Just bought a stairgate. The instructions say to fit it to bottom stair but we can't as the end bit of the bannister which we need to attach it to is on the second stair so we have no choice but to attach it to the second stair. Anybody else had this issue? Any problems we should be aware of?

When my sister was little the stairgate was on the second stair. All was fine.

No, we did that with ours too for the same reason and it was fine.

We've just fitted our stairgate to the second stair. The main issue is that our DD (cruising, not yet walking) tends to stand on the first step holding on to the stairgate, and I am always worried that she will fall backwards and hit her head 9we have hard wood floors).

She seems to be getting the hang of not doing that, though ie. finding ways to crawl b

Ours is attatched to the second stair and has been for the last 4 years and 3 babies with no accidents

Thanks everybody for the reassurance, we did not think it would be a particular problem until we saw the instructions. I guess DD may try and get on to the first step and may fall back but we will deal with it if we have to!

We had to do this (may have even been third stair) as stairs went directly off lounge and the walls came in at different stairs.

We never had a problem, and DD learned to climb just 2 stairs, and reverse down again
