Baby in back seat?

Does anyone know if there is any reason that a baby in first stage seat cannot go in the back of a car? Travelling with friend tomorrow who has air bags in front. Thanks.

yes - mine does for the same reason

I think the back seat is actually safer anyway if - heaven forbid - you crash or bump anything. The highway code says kids should be in the back in a suitable seat, doesn't it?

Thanks for your responses, all in time for my journey tomorrow morning. Life savers (literally!).

I have never had any stage seat in the front of the car. I think it's just that some parents like to be able to see the baby especially if they are travelling alone.

I've also never had the baby seat in the front of the car. My first stage baby seat came with the instruction that 'the safest seat is behind the front passenger seat' so that's where ds has always been.

It's good to have children in the back and not the front passenger seat as this is where 90% of accidents occur when another car is involved. I always remember that.

Various places will check that your car seat is fitted correctly - apparently a scary proportion aren't - like Halfords, and in our area (Cheshire) certain local garages. I got mine checked while I was pregnant and I was b**y glad I had when my car was written off by a maniac in a stolen car when ds was 3 months old and a passenger. Luckily neither of us were hurt but thinking about it has kept me awake a few nights!

Children can apprently de decapitated by the force of the airbag on impact!! I do know that it sounds bizarre but GMTV ran a thing on properly fitting car seats a while ago and they brought this up.

Children should always travel in the back seat of a car, and you have to learn to ignore your baby if they are crying when you are driving. My daughter knows that she can speak to me but she is in huge trouble if she kicks up whilst I am driving. Your lives are the most precious things - my mother died in a car accident when I was 11 months old and my sister was critically injured - and the repercusions of my sister's injurys and the absence of my mother have had a huge impact on my whole family.

Please take road safety seriously, make sure your child is in the back, is strapped in properly and your car is in a safe condition to drive and roadworthy (lots of accidents happen when cars have broken down and had to stop on busy roads). Also when you are rushing to get somewhere remember that it is better to get there late than not at all because you have become a statistic of road traffic accidents. I look at all the people rushing about and think - is it a matter of life or death that they have to be somewhere at a certain time - if you drive unsafely it may end up being a matter of life or death!! (God I am dramatic this morning!!) Please be careful all!!

Boe ... a very well said post ... You always think 'It'll never happen to us' and then when you hear a story like yours it makes you stop and think .... Thank you ...
FWIW ... my DS sometimes rides in the front ... but usually it is for a reason (the seats are down in the back and we are delivering things etc) ... I prefer him in the back ...

Ours have always gone in the back, as we have twins !!!

jac34 · 11/06/2003 11:06

They do fight though, and we have to put their older sister between them to keep the peace !!!

I also only ever put car seats in the back of a car as ours, and parents and in-laws all have airbags. The back is safest anyway.
