Washer Dryers. Good, bad or indifferent? I am thinking of purchasing...

Have been given some money for Christmas and am going to put it to good use replacing a couple of shagged out appliances that came with the house. Currently have a washing machine in the kitchen and a separate little tumble dryer but it lives in the dining room as there is nowhere else for it to live. Have to open the window and stick the hose out every time we use it, which is in winter...when it's freezing and we don't want the window open .

Anyway, I have heard good and bad about washer dryers. I like the idea of being able to stick dirty washing in and it coming out clean and dry...

ours was shite - the dryer took ages and ages.
i miss it now. just for those occasional necessary uses.

Nevergoogle · 18/12/2009 19:42

it doesn't quite work like that in practise because you have to remove all the stuff that isn't suitable for the dryer and put the rest back in again.
while you're drying you also can't be getting more washing done either.

we have a washer drier and we have no space for a drier at all.

i don't think they dry as well as ordinary driers eithe.

the drier only gets used in laundry emergencies but we manage.

washer dryers are rubbish - don't bother. ours was forever breaking, washing machine repair guy told us they don't last half as long as separate appliances which we now have. As Gloria mentioned the dryer takes forever as well, seems to steam the clothes rather than dry them. HTH

Awww, I wanted you all to say they were lovely. . I suppose I could get a cupboard made to house the little sod tumble dryer.

Another thumbs down, the dryer can't take a full wash load grrr and takes an age.

We have a seperate tumble in the garage,

Rhian82 · 18/12/2009 20:17

Ours is okay, but that's cos we don't use it much! We've only had a washing machine before, but our (rented) flat came with one and it's useful for when I've missed a day of nappy washing and will run out if I can't dry them NOW, or for making things fluffy. Not sure apart from that though.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 18/12/2009 20:21

They're no way near as good as separates. If you're replacing the tumble dryer though, get a condenser one. That way you won't need to open the window - just remember to empty the water after each use.

addictedtolatte · 18/12/2009 20:39

another thumbs down here. it take about 2 hours to dry a teatowel.

missingtheaction · 18/12/2009 20:39

better than no tumbledryer at all not anything like as good as seperate ones

Itsjustafleshwound · 18/12/2009 20:42

We had the use of one in our rented flt and I just remember that it really didn't do a good job at all and seemed to take forever!!

The thing to remember is that any appliance is going to be compromised if it has to perform two very dissimilar actions - wash and dry ... I would say you will be better off with a better faster, condenser dryer and washing machine

SugarMagrundy · 18/12/2009 20:48

We have one in our new (rented) flat but I haven't had to use it yet, because we also have a PULLEY thingy in the bathroom which is amazing at drying things quickly. I was very surprised. Hot air rises and all that. I guess you have to have high ceilings to have one. But it is great, honestly. And Green!

lizziemun · 18/12/2009 21:23

It realy depends on whether you use your dryer all the time in which case I would get a condenser (SP) one.

I have a washer dryer but only use the dryer as a last resort to finish off if the washing hasn't dried in 24hrs.

RockBird · 18/12/2009 21:32

Ah well, seems unanimous. Thank you (sob!). The tumble dryer I have is fine and works well, it's just the lack of space for it that I hate and a condenser would be even bigger. I hate having it in a corner of the dining room as the room never looks nice with it stuck there. Oh well, such is life.

Thanks though

I love my washer / dryer - it's a Bosch and I've had it for almost 10 years. I actually only really use the dryer option for towels, but it's nice to know it's there should I wish to use it for clothes, bed linen, pillows, should I need it.
