Runners - I need something to take the smell out of DHs trainers before I throw him and the trainers out

DH is a runner, runs a lot, has a v expensive pair of running shoes and they absolutely stink.

They smell like cat wee (so much so I was blaming the cats and sniffing the carpet).

Anyway today I washed them in the washing machine in the special sports shoe was, probably not recommended but desperate times and all that, and put them on the radiator, now the entire downstairs smells of cat wee again.

So now it's off to Boots or somewhere to find a spray or something before I throw him and his trainers out for good.

any recommendations????

i make my dh keep his in his car tied up in a bag.....prob not what you are looking for! i too was sniffing round the house looking at cats and children suspiciously!

Earlybird · 21/11/2009 23:33

i think it is probably old sweat that is 'festering' in the fabric of the shoes, and don't think you can really do anything about it.

Maybe sprinkle talc to absorb the odor for now? But won't help longterm.

Does he wear socks when he runs?

Think he may have to keep the shoes outside/in the garage/etc.

I have exactly the same problem and have been unable to decide whether ds's football boots and dh's trainers have been peed on by the cats or whether they just stink like that.

I put the trainers through the washing machine to no avail.

Dirty buggers!

I once heard that putting cat litter into shoes absorbs the smells successfully...

Try soaking/washing in vinegar mixed with water, use the whole bottle of it and leave for a day,it should get rid of the smell completely

heartofgold · 23/11/2009 13:02

sprinkle bicarb in them and leave overnight. sorts out mine. washing machine really really bad for proper running shoes (so i hear).

catinthehat2 · 23/11/2009 13:09

You'll be wanting to inspect this I think......

SkipToMyLou · 23/11/2009 13:09

Just what I need, manky football/rugby boots in my house and I was driving the kids to training this weekend. I can't machine wash them as they're leather, bicarb sounds cheap and cheerful, I shall report back!

catinthehat2 · 23/11/2009 13:17

I feel your pain

You can get shoe spray in tesco or boots which is very effective. Its Scholl odour control shoe spray (just checked!). I keep it in our shoe trunk and give his stinky trainers a spray every time I open it to get my shoes and it does the trick. There are also some little balls you can stick in them which help, but I got them from the triathlon show so I dont know where you get them - probably sweatshop. They are v good too.
