Well thank you Marina - put it on our ebay wishlist now! And, in return, you know I'd just never thought about Just William - have been sort of discouraging Horrid Henry, as ds not too brilliant on appropriate behaviour, but JW should be fine. Used to kind of inhabit it myself, in scatty scruffy tomboy days.

The Martin Jarvis carefully edited versions are perfect for a good reader of this age group Binkie. All of the gentle humour and period detail and just a tiny bit of the challenging vocabulary removed.
Ds read us the one about the Punch and Judy man and the pretentious violinist when we were all on holiday recently and it was touching and hilarious in turn.

lisalisa, for us 6 is at the upper end of Playmobil age range - I'm not sure ds is going to go on with it much longer, so if it's a stretch I wouldn't go for it. As I'm realising (with the help of this thread) mine is getting much more into "real" things - tools and gadgets - than toys: calculators, compasses, magnets, torches, that sort of thing.

clary · 22/06/2005 14:17

Yeah agree with binkie, if you don't have any playmobil I might not go for it.
We have "collected" it over the last 2 yrs via gifts from friends (the only bit we bought was the paddling pool - fab)
But I also have a 4yo and a 2yo so it's got a lot of life in it yet iyswim.
I think with just a 6yo (is he yr only one lisa?) then you need to look "beyond" toys, as binkie suggests.

I meant a north-south-east-west compass. Essential when hunting buried treasure. And of course, how could I have forgotten - a metal detector!! Do please get him one of those. Try Science Museum website.

Actually the other kind of compass is very popular too, as, bizarrely, is a set square, a protractor, etc.

If he says he wants Playmobil then go for it - castle pretty good for girly play too, specially if you can get a dragon or two - Early Learning Centre does brilliant ones. Also unicorns, phoenixes ... but now I'm on to Toys For Four Year Old Girls.

lego lego lego lego is all that DS plays with and has done for years He is now 10 but has been building up collection for years

clary · 22/06/2005 17:14

oh yes lisa if you have younger ones then the castle sounds fab. Girls will certainly play with it too, you could always buy a few wench-figures (playmobil comes in big and small sets) if you felt you really needed too.
But I'm sure my dd (4) wd love that.

Apologies if this repeats everything which has already been said but don't have time to read through! DS1 who has just turned 7 was/is really into Lego and KNex, Brio (or its cheaper brothers from Ikea and Tesco!)and Action Man, although he is kind of growing out of Action Man now. Geomag is also good, but expensive. He also likes anything to do with Science (e.g. skeleton figures, compass, magnifying glass etc)or spy stuff and is now old enough to really appreciate most games inc. Guess Who?, draughts, charades etc

Mama5 · 22/06/2005 20:22

all of the above but an absolute find has been MICRO MACHINES ... tiny playsets that fold up into a vehicle. Fabulous and very long standing fun for all my boys , 12,8 and 2 !

The typewriter has arrived. It cost £2 on ebay and it and its containing case are in immaculate condition, even complete with receipt from shop in Kilburn where it was bought in 1963.

Everyone in dh's office has been playing with it all morning.

DS1 got hold of an Asterix & Obelix book-game over the weekend. I have to play it with him since he can't read yet, but Asterix & Obelix go on an adventure with their dog & tools & roll dice to make decisions, I read what happens after each decision... DS1 is 5.5yo & he loves it!! Any sort of adventure/story game might be good, methinks.
