suncream irritating skin

sparkle · 01/06/2003 20:25

Over the last couple of days I have tried different suncreams for children all of which seem to bring my DS out in a rash on his arms, chest and face. Can anyone reccomend a cream that might be good for sensitive skin (my DS doesn't have sensitive skin as far as I know)

I've tried Boots Soltan (factor 50 and orange coloured factor 25) and Banana Boat solid stick factor 30

Whoops, just seen the other sunscreen thread a little way down the list but any suggestions still welcome.

Honestly not being flash - have tried loads on 12 month old dd who can't have anything other than aqueous cream in bath as skin is so sensitive and the only suncream that was OK was Clarins (expensive!) sorry!

LIZS · 01/06/2003 20:30

We have used Ambre Solaire for Kids factor 30 on our dd who has sensitive skin and now on ds who has always been more tolerant. Nice squirty bottle and actually seems to moisturise too.

bunny2 · 01/06/2003 21:13

E45 do a good cream (several in fact) for children with sensitive skin / eczema. We use it on our ds who has severe eczema and he has no adverse reaction to these creams. Roc also do an excellent one, its available on prescription for some people but we just buy it over the counter. Cant remember what it is called but a pharmacy would know. The Roc one was recommended by our dermatologist at Grat Ormond St.

how are you SB? remember me? I have a new alias

wiltshirelass · 01/06/2003 22:14

not very helpful, I know, but the only one I have found which doesn't irritate my dd's excema prone skin is hawaiian tropic baby faces and tender places (pink bottle). used to buy it here but I haven't found it for ages and now I bulk buy every time I'm in the states, which usually works out once or twice a year. I can share with you the ones which are the worst - childrens nivea (don't go near it with a barge pole), children's piz buin isn't good, soltan is not so bad but still bad, sun e45 pretty terrible. As I said not very helpful but will watch this thread with interest to see what anyone else recommends...

josiejump · 01/06/2003 22:25

Avoid Sainsburys own brand as it contains a really nasty chemical, the name of which escapes me, but I remember reading horror stories about it last year and checking all our lotions and potions only to find it in that, and some Johnsons baby nappy rash cream. Needless to say, both got binned.

wiltshirelass · 01/06/2003 22:36

no, josiejump, you can't leave it there! tell us the name of the chemical we are inadvertently poisoning our children with! we need to know!

wiltshirelass · 01/06/2003 22:37

ps I agree with the roc recommendation, we tried that and it was fine and I'd completely forgotten until now. hurrah, now I have an option if my baby faces runs out! thank you bunny 2...

tomps · 01/06/2003 23:56

Dr haushka is organic and doesn't contain nasty chemicals so less likely to cause reaction. It's expensive but smells fantastic and you can use it too, so more likely to use the tube up rather than adding it to the collection of half used tubes of sun cream at the back of the bathroom cupboard. Or is that just me ?

sparkle, have another look at the thread under Health on big school and suncream - suedonim (who lives in Indonesia) recommends P20 and has done a link to their website, you can get a free sample to try.

P20 is nothing like ordinary sunscreens, it's a clear liquid which goes on very easily, you have to let it dry before you put clothes on top and wait 90 mins before going out, but it is supposed to be excellent. (I get terrible prickly heat and on holiday in Switzerland once I was recommended to use it by a pharmacist.)

Finbar · 02/06/2003 12:13

I can also reccommend the sunscreen from Neal's Yard and their aftersun lotion which is delicioius! Someone mentioned about products being PABA free -these are. Good luck!

Sorry Wiltshire lass, forgot I'd posted and only came back here yesterday. Went to Sainsburys today as I couldn't remember the name, but knew I'd recognise it if I saw it. Anyway, the chemical is called methyldibromo glutaronitrile ( see why I couln't remember it?!) and apparently last year EU advisors were calling for restrictions on its use as it can triggerallergic reactions, such as swelling, itching and painful dermatitis. It can be found in various products, including detergents, but using it in a suncream is especially dodgy due to the length of time it is in contact with the skin.
I checked the baby cream ingredients today and it had gone, and although it wasn't in the kids factor 15, it was in the factor30 and the one for sensitive skin, can you believe! Mind you it was the last listed ingredient so I suppose they would say that it is within safe limits, but I don't think I'd want to take the chance. A friend of mines daughter had a horrific reaction to something in detergent and I'm pretty sure it was MDBGN that was responsible.

We use one called Sunsense water resistant toddler milk. It is made in Australia and is SPF 50. It is brilliant - rolls on, isn't sticky, doesn't bother my babies' (eczema prone) skin and, despite having very pale skin, has protected them in very strong sun. Last one I got through the mail, but don't remember how. Try looking up Sunsense on Google.

I've only just read this thread as we've been away on holiday, and have found it really interesting, as dd has suddenly started to have an ezcema flare up. I had thought that it might be connected to suncream and Wiltshirelass it was interesting to hear what you said about Nivea cream, as I have just started to use it on her, so I'll stop straightaway.

eidsvold · 14/06/2003 13:48

Sunsense range is brilliant...

eidsvold · 14/06/2003 13:50

sorry can't do links yet but it is

www.sunsense.co.uk

  • they have a uk range. My brother uses it in Australia and swears by it.
eidsvold · 14/06/2003 13:51

the company - ego pharmaceuticals also do other skin care products which are designed for people with sensitive skin - sure excema and so on too (?)

You can go to them via the sunsense website.

Just discovered this forum.

Just for info E45 Sun block SPF50 suncream has a product recall on it at present. Bottles with a lot number 1LL or use before date of 03/2004 may separate, leaving a thin liquid on top of a thick cream base. The thin liquid will not give adequate coverage. They list this tel no 0800 032 0972.

My daughter has very bad eczema and major food allergies and we have now discovered Simple SunSensitive Skin Baby & Toddler sun block SPF50 and she's ok with that. We had tried the Boots Soltan sensitive and she developed a rash too (among other problems)

Hope this info helps
