we need to get a new fan (or 2) to put in DS's room - at the moment we have a circular fan with a grill but would be more comfortable with a good fan where it is IMPOSSIBLE to insert a curious finger to touch a blade IYKWIM

we've got one like that but it's pretty noisy (not that precise model)- only put it in dd's room after she's asleep!

We got one years ago (but they still sell them) that came in bright colours from woolies or B&Q that had criss cross instead of a normal grill and was really quiet. Cost about 8.99 6 y ago but I still see them for sale.

We have one on a stick from Sainsburys, twiggy. It's Goldstar, cheap and cheerful but totally childproof cover - tiny holes - £12.99. You should be able to get the equivalent from any DIY store and it shouldn't cost much more than that.

Having said that, I've just been googling, they all seem to be those towers now, don't they? I suppose they are neater and safer (and cleaner, the blades do get grubby on a conventional one) but I'm sure the old-fashioned kind move the air better.

The ones on a stick are dead useful, they can be set to rotate or not, you can angle the fan to point up, down or be level and they are taller than a tower.

is that true? do the tower heaters get hot?

We have the ceiling fans in ours and dd's bedroom (the ones that are a light as well) and they are fantastic in this weather and are very quiet compared to the usual desk fans. They are quite pricy but will last years and are very safe (haven't got one in the boys bedroom cos they have bunk beds and they might be able to reach it so they have a tower fan which is quite good).

No, Twiglett, it's this one - it's £17.99 or about that in Homebase stores and we got one of ours yesterday on 10% day, so it was about £15.

It doesn't seem to get hot - certainly blows cool air at me in the night

Yep, certainly looks v like the ones we have at home! Identical in fact! They had stacks of them before the heatwave...you might not be so lucky now!
