We had really bad frost today and that has reminded me how much time I waste getting ice and frost off my windscreen. Anyone know what works well?

Water, but not hot or you'll crack your windscreen

GunpowderTreasonAndDragons · 09/11/2009 17:56

I put those silver foil windscreen protectors on the night before. the ice forms on them, not the glass.

cathcat · 09/11/2009 18:00

Where did you get yours Gunpowder? I got a plastic sheet thing from Halfords last year but no idea where it is now. Not much good anyway.

I use the side of a CD case!!

Emprexia · 09/11/2009 18:17

water, anti-freeze or a heated windscreen

bluejeans · 09/11/2009 18:31

De-icer in a pump spray thing not an aerosol (3 for 2 at halfords) - and preferably a DH to do it while you eat your breakfast

yama · 09/11/2009 19:11

We use hot water.

FritesMenthe · 09/11/2009 19:20

de-icer, heated windscreen on, engine on and fan at full blast hot.
Oh, and most importantly, do all this then go back indoors and finish your breakfast. Assuming your car won't get nicked in the meantime of course.
I got caight by surprise this morning too.

yama · 09/11/2009 19:33

Hot water is a 30 second job.

AMumInScotland · 09/11/2009 19:57

Another one for warm water here - just tepid is enough. One big jug-full will clear all my windows. First start the engine and turn on your fans/heaters/etc, then drizzle the water, put the jug back in the house and lock the door, and set off!

GunpowderTreasonAndDragons · 09/11/2009 21:30

My screen things came from Tchibo. I put one on the front and with a bit of creativeness fit one on the rear. The window Sox I have for summer seem to do a good job of protecting the rear windows which just leaves me the front side ones to de-ice.

GunpowderTreasonAndDragons · 09/11/2009 21:31

The problem with using water is that, if it's cold enough, it freezes all over your windscreen again.

Hello,
I know this thread has been inactive for a while however we have created a nice blog on defrosting your windscreen. We hope it is a help to some people if I'm sorry just thought it would come in handy.
Many thanks,
Tim
