The man who came to fix my drier (a Whirpool condenser) said to buy a Candy - he never sees those! However, he also said Whirlpool were very reliable, apart from the thermostat going every couple of years which was why he saw mine.

I also have a Whirlpool Condenser and am really happy with. Good thing about a condenser is that there's no pipe so you just need to open a window. My sister had a Candy washing machine and had sooooo many problems with it that she made Argos replace it a new brand. I would also suggest you go some where like John Lewis as you get better service/aftercare which is what you really need.

We bought a cheap vented one from White Knight , who I think may be related to Whirlpool. Fairly basic but around £120 at the time (5.5yrs ago) and has survived 3 yrs our use and 2 yrs tenants use, as far as we know.

Here, we have a Bosch sensor condenser dryer which is fine but as it is in a confined space tends to still produce a lot of condensation if on for a while. Given the choice I would plumb the water outlet in rather than rely on emptying the drawer.

Choice of vent or condenser would depend on where you plan to put it.

Which always recommend Creda Reversair and so do I - have had 2 in 20 years, one an actual Creda and the other an Electra but made by Creda. (Reverse tumbling minimises creasing cos the things don't get stuck going round and round and round in the same position.)

Have just checked Tesco Direct - they have one for just under £150 and double Clubcard points (but up to 2 weeks delivery time )

We were talked into a condenser model - but I'm really not that impressed with it. The room just fills up with steam, & it seems to take ages to get clothes dry (around 1 1/2 hours for an average load). In future I'd go for one with a pipe - plus they tend to be cheaper.

I got a Creda condenser one 2.5 years ago, and it's been great - quite cheap (for a condenser) - £220 or so. It dries all our laundry so we run it every day or so, and we've not had any problems.

I had to have a condenser, as it was going into a rented flat, and the only place to put it was against an internal wall.

My only slight complaint is that it's noisy. Next time, I'd prefer to spend more and get a super-quiet one (since it sits in the kitchen).

We have a white knight, i would say they are the best ones to go for. That is just my opinion, although i had my moms old one which was a creda, and that lasted for more than 12 years. Hope you find the right one.

I would recommend White Knight - when I bought mine earlier this year it was the cheapest in the shop (still about £120), the only A energy efficiency dryer and it's a sensor dry! It was recommended by the man in the shop (which I thought was pretty good as there were far more expensive models available)

(Bought it to replace my Candy which died at an early age)

The only thing is that it was a bit noisy at first, getting quieter

I found one in my (Abound) catelogue for £99. A separate condenser for it was only £14!! £113 for the lot. Wonderful.

RockingRosebud · 22/05/2003 17:52

Another vote for the White Knight, recommended by Which? magazine.

Remember the hose is coiled up in the back and don't buy another one like I did, doh!

Would a vented t/d be OK to put in a garage?
Is the Creda Reversair vented or condensing?

Can you tell I'm also thinking about buying a tumble dryer? Never had one before. ANy tips - dos and don'ts?
