'luxury' purchases for a new baby

Well, I'm nearly safely through the first trimester and gearing up for some serious maternity retail indulgence
Since this is likely to be my last baby and I already have most of the basics, I am looking for ideas for stuff that is really nice to have but, erm, not strictly necessary....
I'm sure you gals can give me the necessary inspiration!

Granny is asking what to get this little one and tbh I am tempted just to ask for a new baby car seat. Our old mammas and pappas one from the travel system is really heavy and tatty looking with bits which catch on your legs when you carry it. Having just bought a maxi cosi for DD, I am so impressed that I'm thinking of getting gran to get me the baby version. Seems a bit extravangent as this will be my last baby but figure it will make quite a bit difference for me on a day to day basis - so my suggestion would be if you've got an item which you don't really like but feel you can't justify replacing - then blow caution to the wind and splash out.

The other thing is to treat myself! Thinking of a subscription to junior mag which I love but is never in the shops round here or maybe some luxury underwear. Already treated myself to some scrummy washable sanpro which is so comfy compared to the disposable variety. Discovering a whole new world out there.....

Is there still a link to Junior subscriptions off the site here? The discount was pretty good IIRC.

Driving past a shop on holiday about a year ago I saw a rocking crib made out of cane or wicker or something like that, with a cotton sheet covering the sides (so baby didn't end up with wicker patterns all over them) and big fabric rabbits hanging down all the way round.

Bit hard to describe but it was gorgeous but considering shop is 360 miles away, we couldn't go and have another look when we knew dd was on the way. I looked all over the net for something similar but haven't been able to find anything that comes close, and it would probably be far too expensive too!

If someone could find cribs like that, that was definitely a luxury purchase to be grabbed!

Oh, that reminds me. When I was pg, I didn't like any of the moses baskets around so I drove out to somewhere in Derbyshire and spoke to someone who makes things in wicker.

I bought a mattress from Mothercare and he made a moses basket to fit it. It's not flat around the top but curves up slightly at one end, with holes in the side for your hands to fit through, rather than having straps attached.

DD slept in it for about one or two nights and since then it has made a lovely toy basket/car/boat/plane, etc!

elliott - you must be reading my mind! I'm getting real urges to buy somethnng for the new baby, but as it's number 3 already have pretty much everything, except a bf pillow - but that's not too exciting, is it?

i'd say, go for the Kwi explorer. I really like mine, and the newer models look even better.

Question about the sheepskin. They're really popular here, to the point that people stop you & ask why you haven't got one! I've never been that keen. I guess the whole 'keeps you warm in winter & cool in summer' blurb fills me with scepticism. Can this really be true? Why do they shear sheep then? I'm open to pursuasion, as I'm itching to get something for baby, but already have 3 pushchairs, 2 slings and everything imaginable really.

How many weeks are you now elliott? Never did see that woman agin with the double/single stroller btw

On the advice of a Mumsnetter I got a Kipling pram bag on the internet. I love it. I'm sure there are lots of others just as good but I hadn't found any in the shops I liked and this one's trendy and original and makes me feel good! (sad?)

Libragirl · 20/06/2003 23:26

Beautiful clothes, a handmade blanket to keep, or a cashmere one.

piffle · 25/04/2005 11:52

ikea sell NZ lambskins a snip too but they are an essential not a luxury surely?
My mum bought cashmere back from Chinese boutique after she finished working in China just as dd was born
baby pink cashmere, we still have it, so amazing, I'd def recommend cashmere, gorgeous!!!

jojo28 · 25/04/2005 18:59

My bank balance busting favorites are as follows

You guys, this may be completely unfair of me, but I think Chow may be (maybe), has only restarted this thread to advertise that website, and only for that reason.
